Can't access most websites

Something must have updated over the weekend, because starting this morning, I cannot access many websites (the page half-loads, but most of the content won’t load) unless I completely disable my web shield. Anyone else?

Some details might be helpful ‘most websites’ is a huge number and not helpful in trying to pin down why.

Some examples of the sites you are experiencing this with would be helpful.
Please break active links to suspect sites to avoid accidental exposure, only post the domain-name or change the https to htXXp to break the link.

Ordinarily I would have expected the Web Shield to ‘Alert’ but that doesn’t appear to be the case as you didn’t mention that. It looks like some sort of conflict with the site/s security and the Web Shield, hence the need for more details.

Hi David,
Some of the sites include Amazon, LinkedIn and at least 10 websites I’ve created on WordPress.

Note, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.

I use Amazon a lot without issue, I’m using Avast Antivirus Free for Windows. I don’t use LinkedIn at all so I can’t comment there.

I can access the site, but not having an account that’s as far as I can go. The fact that you have to login the actually get past that page.

There would appear to be some redirection going on (to validate you), but at least I was able to get to the domain before getting to the page/your pages/sites. That may well be where the conflict lies.

You could try adding an Avast exclusion - effective for all avast shields (so care needs to be taken) for the pages you are experiencing issues with.

But without some further details on these wordpress sites I simply can’t test, check.

This started to happen to me too after installing AntiTrack a day ago. A lot of sites are either blocked, or half load. The thing is, even uninstalling AntiTrack won’t solve the issue. If I go into the main Settings in Avast, the sites work for about five minutes if I play around with turning off shields or adding Chrome to App permission, then they stop working again.

Furthermore, my AntiTrack’s dashboard only shows blocked tracking activity and nothing else. There are only two buttons, Help&Support, and Settings. The former opens the Avast Support website, and in Settings I can only turn on/off the OS Tracker Blocking, Notifications, and clear tracking data. It looks nothing like on the Avast AntiTrack support page on the site.

We don’t know if the Original Poster (OP) is using AntiTrack.

I don’t believe adding Chrome to the exclusions would have made a difference as technically Avast isn’t blocking the browser but the site you are trying to visit using that browser.

Have you tried adding the site to the Avast Exclusions, as it should apply to the Avast Shields. Though I don’t know if that would also include AntiTrack.

It’s not a matter of adding them to the Exclusions list. Every site I visited experienced the same issue. The page loads very slowly (if at all) when the WebShield is on. As soon as I turn it off, all web pages load normally again. This happens on Chrome and on Firefox. BTW I am not using AntiTrack (not sure what that even is)

You’re not on a VPN by any chance? If so, try changing endpoints.

I am not on a VPN.

Unfortunately with out any examples of the the sites you are experiencing no one can check.

I was able to linkdin.com but only to the login page not be able to proceed further.

Remember we can’t see what is on your screen when the problem occurs, so without more details it is impossible to investigate. Screenshots are also very helpful.

We still don’t know what Avast product/s you are using.

Yes, I have tried adding to exceptions, and with Web shield not having its “Enable site blocking” active. The sites work for about five minutes, then they stop working again. For example, if I try to post or reply on X, it doesn’t let me and asks me to save as draft. Saving as draft also won’t work, and the only solution is to close the prompts. After I close the prompts, the site’s main feed will only display the Reload button, and reloading does nothing.

If I uninstall AntiTrack, the sites don’t work at all, regardless of exception/permission or turning off the WebShield.

I will probably do a clean re-install. The irony is that I only used the Avast Free Security before with no issues. Once I installed Premium stuff, it all went downhill.

Weird - I use Avast Antivirus Free and I use twitter aka X a lot and no issues.
Though I do get some hiccups relating to cr4p internet connection (having to reload pages), but I also get that on other internet activity.

I think I figured it out (with no help from the Avast tech support). In December, Avast wasn’t working on my new computer. To fix it, tech support recommended that I install the Beta version of Avast. That worked, so I kept it installed and kind of forgot about it. I noticed this morning the BETA symbol next to the Avast logo so I thought, could that be the problem? Sure enough, I uninstalled the Beta version, reinstalled the “real” version of Avast, and voila! Everything is working as it should! Avast better be happy I noticed that because I was thisclose to removing it and installing Malwarebytes.

I’m the first to give Avast a hard time when they screw up, but how is this their fault??

One thing to note is, Avast Beta’s Web Shield includes (at least certain portion of) AntiTrack feature.
In my experience (years ago though), AntiTrack sometimes blocks some website from loading or making them act weirdly etc.

Interesting, NON. Maybe that is why I was having problems!
