Cant find ashAvast.exe

Ok Ive installed avast on a friends PC & scanned & removed a virus on reboot, however when the desktop loads the avast icon on the desktop is just a white square instead of the blue ball & when I try to launch it it says cant find ashAvast.exe?

Ive also removed the HDD & connected it to another PC & done a full scan with an updated avast & it doesnt find any other viruses but if I reinstall avast on the drive & connect it back to the main PC & boot into windows it comes up with a message briefly saying ‘avast.exe has been modified, continuing may be dangerous, launch avast’? or something similar. If I say yes the 2 icons load for a few moments in the system tray then disappear. I am still unable to launch avast.

Any ideas?

Oh btw, best AV program ever. This is the first time in 12 months or so of use that it appears a virus has this program miffed.

Well, the avast installed this way is the the same drive letter? I mean, you have a computer with a C: drive, than add the problematic one that should be, at least, the D:
When you come back to the first computer, the partition should be C: again and avast won’t work.

Do you use any other antivirus in the problematic computer?
Why didn’t you try to repair your installation? Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove. Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair). You must be connected to the internet while repairing. Or, just uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

Welcome to the forums, dscomp.

Also, did your friend’s computer have a previous anti-virus program?

Thanks for the replies guys

In answer to your questions no I havent tried repair.

And yes the problem HDD has had several AV’s installed (in an attempt I think to remove the virus/es as Im sure Avast was the original AV that appeared to have been destroyed by the virus/es).

I’ll try repair & failing that I think im up for a format. Just dont like giving up too easily as it has business critical data on it that cant be replaced plus avast has never failed me before. All I can assume is the virus is one thats not yet been identified by Avast & problem is if it doesnt recognise it I cant submit it to you guys for testing :frowning:

Again, a brilliant product I cant recommend highly enough.

cheers

Since the computer had previous av’s, it is very possible that these did not uninstall properly. This is common with Norton/Symantec & McAfee products as well as with other av programs. Be sure whatever other av programs were on that computer were completely uninstalled … including the registry entries. Otherwise, Avast probably would not install correctly. This may be where the problem is.
