Can't get virus and program auto updates with vista

I can’t get auto updates from Avast in Vista, even with the 2 options checked in the settings of Avast. I have to start them manually every single day. Is there a turn around other then disable the security functions in Vista like Admin rights?

What 2 options are you refering to, exactly? If you’re talking about the two checkboxes on the “Update (Connections)” page, then

  1. Make sure to NOT have the “I only connect to the Internet using a dial-up modem” option checked (unless this is the case)
  2. You can leave the “My computer is permanently connected to the Internet” option checked.

Cheers
Vlk

Thanks Vlk,

I was referring to the GENERAL Updates checkboxes, they are both in automatic, I checked in connections and none of the checkboses where on, I put the second one on ‘’ Always connected to INTERNET’’ and I don’t have any proxy at home.

I am waiting for the next update to see if it will work automatically.

Thank you very much for the fast answer !!!

If this setup works fine with Vista and those administrator rights that will be ‘‘the’’ antivirus I will suggest to every Vista Users, just like I did with XP users in the past. This is by far the best free antivirus I have work with for years. Thanks to ALWIL and to you Vlk.

The Program Update is I believe set to Ask by default as this could be a large download that you may not want to jump in whilst you are busy on your system.

This is a good remark DavidR , but all of my client’s PC are not used intensely. The point is that almost nobody make the updates regularly on their PC’s. So by setting it to automatic updates it ensure that they are well protected every day. I don’t know if on the wishlist there is a demand for an option on setting the updates at a particular time of the day. This could be set for updating during the night or early in the morning only.

For now I already had the new update installed manually,000672-4, I am waiting to see if Avast! update will go over the administrator rights to update by itself. If this new setup works, I’m in business!

P4
2,4G
40Gig
1G ram
Vista Ultimate
Avast! free
Windows firewall without outbound check ( this might change soon for the firewall )

Sorry I don’t know much about that hopefully Vlk will jump back in.

The VPS updates differ from the Programs updates, in that the VPS updates are set to auto update, but Program updates are set to Ask, the program update also differs in that there is a seven day cycle of updates to balance server load. Obviously the program updates aren’t that frequent, but the VPS updates are almost daily.

Limited users, even in XP can’t do program updates but can do VPS updates, so it looks like that restriction is the same in Vista.

I don’t know how many systems you have or if the ADNM (avast! Distributed Network Management) might manage these updates better, or if it might be a litle over the top http://www.avast.com/eng/adnm.html.

This is a good suggestion, I will check on that if it is free. I have about 10 PC at home and I service PC over different networks around Montreal. This software might do the work, because Vista is getting installed in small offices already and if the update don’t work automatically by itself, I would use that instead. Thank you very much DavidR and Vlk for helping me so quickly and also informing me of ALWIL products so accurately. I am very impress by your support. Hoping this thread can help other too.

By the way… I just checked my update and… it works!!! new version installed 000762-5 2007-07-31

So AVAST! works just fine with Vista now!!! I’m in business guys!!!

No problem glad I could help as I’m only an avast user like yourself, trying to help other avast users.
