Can't install Avast Free antivirus on Windows 2000 SP4

Installer says “Your operating system does not meet the minimum requirements. You can install avast! only on Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or higher”. But i have it.

As the log says - KB816542 hotfix is also required.

Thanks! It works now. But installer might have been more specific in his error messages.

It’s supposed to be… it’s an omission that will be fixed.

I couldn’t find KB816542 hotfix in microsoft website. Where could I find KB816542 hotfix to download?

Read here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816542
asyn

Direct link to request the hotfix.

I’ve download the hotfix. When I run the executable it asks me where to install it - where do I install it? do I have to do anything after that?

Thanks for any help,

T

I can’t install either for the apparent same reason:
23:25:07 min/gen Return code: 0x20000021 [You can install avast! only after the hotfix KB816542 is installed.
Use Windows Update or download it from Microsoft’s website.]
23:25:07 min/gen Stopped: 23.05.2010, 23:25:07

I wonder why I receive that message since my OS was recognized as XP sp3
23:25:07 min/gen Started: 23.05.2010, 23:25:07
23:25:07 min/gen Running setup_ais-221 (545)

Besides, Microsoft states that KB816542 is meant for Windows 2000, the functionality is supposedly integrated in XP
(from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816542)
“The Windows XP Low Fragmentation Heap Algorithm Feature Is Available for Windows 2000”

Can someone help me? Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you’re running the installer in “compatibility mode”…

As far as I know I did not invoke any compatibility mode. Just
setup_av_free.exe /savelog “C:/temp/install.log”
in a cmd
Any other suggestion?

The microsoft website no longer lists the hotfix. Avast insists on it - what do I do ? (move to Macafee - HA Ha LOL)

Which link did you try…??
asyn

The links posted here lead to the hotfix… it just seems you have to “request it” now, i.e. there’s no direct download link.

The links lead to the list of hotfixes available, the last page in the sequence is

http://support.microsoft.com/hotfix/KBHotfix.aspx?kbnum=816542&kbln=en-us#step1

which does not list the KB816542 hotfix, only the PKG38115 hotfix in various languages

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks JRvdP

Try it here…!

Asyn,

Thanks for the reply.

The page discusses the hotfix kb/816542.

However, the “hotfix available” link is not functional / highlighted, and the page says you have to submit a request to microsoft who may then send you the hotfix - where can the hotfix just be downloaded or do I have to go through more microrigmarole ?

JRvdP

furthermore there seems to be no way I can find to submit the hotfix request - I am a newbie and may be doing something stupid or wrong, but avast av is insisting onthe hotfix which I can’t find ! Help…
