Please help! I installed avast today, and since then I’ve been unable to open my Word- and Excel files. When I try to open Word I get this message: “Word cannot open this document template. (C:.…\STARTUP\EN9Cwyw.dot)”. And if I try to open an already existing document I get this message: “The file Filename.doc is not available.” When I try to open Excel I get this message: “The file cannot be opened because your virus scanner has detected a problem with the file”. I ran the scanning when I restarted my computer after installing Avast, and it found no infected files or anything…how come I can’t open these files then? And better yet, what can I do to fix it? ???

Avast does not interfere with this type of file in the manner reported. If the file was infected, the message would be quite different, and accompanied with a siren.
Commonly, this general type of problem is caused by the remnant of another AV causing interference.
What Av was used prior to Avast, how was it removed, and what is your OS?
Do you have something called EndNote installed on your computer?
