Can't play videos on Hulu

I was watching Hulu videos, without incident, for about 2 hours before this problem occurred. Somewhere near the end of that time frame, I received a notification that the virus database had been updated. About 30 mins or so later, when I loaded a new video on Hulu, I received a little On-Access Scanner pop up message above the systray that said:

“Network Shield: blocked access to malicious site www.hulu.com/player.swf

I have tried:

  1. Adding URLs, w/asterisks as wild cards, to the excluded URLs list
  2. Adding *.swf to the exclusions list
  3. Adding the IP address of the Hulu site to the transparent web scanning ignored addresses
  4. Disabling web scanning

None of these work, either individually or in concert with each other.

I’d like to get Hulu working again, and I’d like to keep using avast!. What do I need to do to make that happen?

Thanks,

Pd

seems like I am not the only one having this issue, glad it isnt just me

I tried the same Web Sheild tactics as prettydaisies, but there are no such modifications available in the Network Shield tab, which is what’s actually blocking hulu player. Anyone got an answer?

well so far, pausing the Network Shield while the particular hulu page loads is enough to bypass the blockage, then resuming it once the video is underway. Still, to have to do this to every hulu vid would be inconvenient.

yeah, I tried the same tactic too, and nothing

Until they fix it you can disable the network shield at the beginning of the video. You can reenable it right after.

I think you have to wait for kubecj to solve this…

That is, if it is an avast problem. It could well be a problem with the player also.

I downloaded player.swf and scanned with avast and nothing, so it may not be the actual file but something on the page to run it.

Yeah, I should have said … It could well be a problem with the player and/or player webpage also.

The HD movies play ok without avast! blocking them.

While I have been on-line there has been a VPS update 090311-0, I just wonder if we are really lucky this might correct it. Though I would have though it would have first had to be acknowledged first.

I have sent an email possible false positive to virus (at) avast (dot) com, hopefully it will be checked out.

I got VPS update 090311-0 before I did any posting this afternoon, so it’s not fixed.

I sure hope they get it fixed! hulu.com is my favorite website! :-X  :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :frowning: >:( >:( :o :o ??? ???

False positive already corrected.

Thanks! :slight_smile: :slight_smile: ;D ;D ::slight_smile: ::slight_smile:

Yes fixed in VPS update 090311-1.

w00t! I posted the problem, then had to go out for a few hours. Upon return, it’s fixed.

Yay! Smart ppl + internetz = lurves

Thanks.

Well avast are quick to correct a false positive when identified, but this was quick ;D

Welcome to the forums.

Thank you for the quick response, I have always put great stock in avast and its nice to be reminded why. Sorry about the double topic post though, it looks like we were typing our topics within minutes of the other
