Can't re-install Avast Secure Brwoser due to weird goopdate.dll error

I had Avast Secure browser 118x on my Windows 10 system which wouldn’t update any more due to system level issues. Tried all the usual whitelisting in the Windows Firewall and my Anti-Virus but no avail, so I thought, hey, maybe a re-install will help.

I used the repair function that is bundled in the Secure Browser uninstaller that successfully did uninstall my 118 version but will not install the new one (I kept my user data). Everytime I try to install, I get a very weird error that seem to be very rare (please see screenshot).

it says something along the line that
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVAST Software\Browser\Update\1.81653.5\goopdate.dll is either not intended to be run on Windows or contains an error and to reinstall it I did. I downloaded the installer file from the official avast website several times).

Errorstatus: 0Xc0000428

As I work in Windows tech support, I know that is a bad sign if only a handful of people have an issue.
I already removed my Antivirus program, stopped all windows defender firewall and virus scanning, the error persists. I even tried the beta version of the Secure Browser installer, same error.

I also have normal chrome version on the system that updates without any issues.

Tried system restore, but my restore point is broken and I won’t re-install my whole windows system for this.

Any ideas? Haven’t tried installing in safe mode yet.

Hey,

we would suggest getting the user to do a clean install, try manually deleting

C:\Program Files (x86)\AVAST Software\Browser

And in regedit, delete

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\WOW6432Node\AVAST Software\Browser

If that doesn’t help then feel free to reach out so that we can continue our investigation.
