I apologize if I’m a bit unclear on things. I am new at this
Earlier today, I got on noticed my computer was running a bit slower. I recently got windows sp3 so I could download path of exile on steam, so I just ignored it. Then, everything was really slow. Opening up task manager because thats what every noob does I see something called update.exe taking up most of the cpu that disappears just after I get the chance to read it. After googleing “update.exe” I didn’t just found some contradicting info so just gave up there. I scanned my computer with avast and malwarebytes, Malwarebytes found nothing(surprisingly) and Avast “could not scan some files” one of which was named “update.exe” suspiciously. Can’t remove it because the apply button is greyed out, during the full and custom scan(during the full scan there were a bunch of password protected files as well) If it helps I clicked on what looked like a phishing site yesterday on facebook(then left without giving my password)
Update.exe is in C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistrubution\Downloads[random characters]\update\update.exe
Think you are hunting ghosts here. Upload the file somewhere (password protected ZIP with “infected” as password) and post the link here so that someone can look. Or, you can submit it to Avast in the same way.
Hardly surprising, it’s cleaned up regularly. Whatever was there is copied over to %WINDIR%$hf_mig$\KB???\update\update.exe so that uninstalling removable hotfixes it possible in future.
Guess I’ll just ignore it until I see it again. Still a bit doubtful because when I googled update.exe one of the suggestions was “update.exe cpu usage” Also, this video www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A2U0KXiarE oh well hopefully your right and thanks for replying so fast ^-^
