Caseware file "CWUI.dll" detected as a malware

Caseware Working Papers File “CWUI.dll” has been detected as a malware.

Clients who use the 2015 free version of Avast anti-virus program were recently updated to version 2015.10.0.2208 (or higher). Since then, they cannot open Working Papers because the Avast software places the cwui.dll file under quarantine.

Please note that this is false positive and the temporary solution to resolve this issue until AVAST address it is as follow:

  1. Access the Virus Chest through the Avast user interface
  2. Find the latest quarantined “cwui.dll” file (note the time stamp of quarantine date)
  3. Right-click that file and click “Restore and add to exclusions”
  4. Open WP 2014 through desktop icon
  5. It will again show the error message and an Avast popup message will show, prompting to allow or block cwui.dll
  6. Clicking allow does nothing, as in the popup stays on the screen – clicking the allow button again also does nothing
  7. Avast somehow quarantines the “cwui.dll” file again (new item in the Virus Chest with latest time stamp)
  8. Right-click that new file and click “Restore and add to exclusions”
  9. Open WP 2014 and no issues
    Notes:
    a. It may be possible that you can skip steps 1 to 3 and start with step 4 by clicking “Allow” the first time, however it does not always work. You will then only have to restore the file, the file once rather than twice.
    b. Using the information in step 2, you can manually add the file path and file name to the exclusion list through AVast User Interface “Settings” icon.

Report it to avast:

This has already been reported to AVAST and hopefully it will be addressed soon.
