Here is one cause, if webshield blocks your internet connection. I just tested this on my Win 7 x64:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment
Check the values for TEMP and TMP
If the specified folder does not exist on your HDD (normally it is “%SystemRoot%\Temp”), then webshield blocks browsertraffic. IMAP, POP, SMTP work fine, also updating Avast works.
(%SystemRoot% = folder, where windows is installed, normally C:\Windows.)
In this case create that folder on your HDD (“C:\Windows\Temp”) and reboot.
If the keys don’t exist in the registry, create them and set values to “%SystemRoot%\Temp”, then create the folder “C:\Windows\Temp” on your HDD, reboot.
I have the registry values and the temp file where you suggested it should be, so any other help or advice would be much appreciated to try to get this sorted out.
I would like to do what you advise but I do not understand clearly what I have to do. I am not that skilled with registry and things like that. Could you provide more details on how to do it please?
You run regedit.exe and navigate to the above mentioned registry keys and check the values. These values are strings and show you, where your “Temp”-folder is expected to be.
Then check with win explorer if this folder is present.
E.g. if the values state: “%SystemRoot%\Temp”, then you should check if the folder “C:\Windows\Temp” is present on your system. If it is not, create it.
If the two keys “tmp” and “Temp” are not present in your registry, create them with regedit.exe and set the values to “%SystemRoot%\Temp”, then create the above mentioned folder with windows explorer.
I tried and it changed nothing The two keys are present in the registry and I created a tmp folder in WINDOWS folder and inside the already exisisting TEMP folder but it changed nothing. When Avast is on, I cannot access internet.
Any other idea?

Zyndstoff has successfully instated an environment in which webshield will not block his internet connection.
The wider problem is that each user brings to each system their own particular environment, be that what it is at that time and in that place for that particular person. There are unfortunately no universal solutions, beyond what is acknowledged as good computer practice, and what is recommended as accepted defaults and settings by manufacturers and distributors of computer hardwares and/or softwares. And even these guidelines and pointers are often only practicable to a certain extent.
Best follow Zyndstoff advise and give the forum some idea of the environment in which yr problem is being found.
I had exactly the same problem, no webpages displayed when webshield was running. I traced it down to an old copy of Norton Internet Security which I had un-installed. Although it has been uninstalled using add/remove programs it was still causing this problem.
I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool and Avast webshield problem went away.
The two keys are present in the registry and I created a tmp folder in WINDOWS folder and inside the already exisisting TEMP folder but it changed nothing. When Avast is on, I cannot access internet.
