Cause for apparent webshield blocking internet connection

Here is one cause, if webshield blocks your internet connection.
I just tested this on my Win 7 x64:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment
Check the values for TEMP and TMP

If the specified folder does not exist on your HDD (normally it is “%SystemRoot%\Temp”), then webshield blocks browsertraffic. IMAP, POP, SMTP work fine, also updating Avast works.
(%SystemRoot% = folder, where windows is installed, normally C:\Windows.)

In this case create that folder on your HDD (“C:\Windows\Temp”) and reboot.

If the keys don’t exist in the registry, create them and set values to “%SystemRoot%\Temp”, then create the folder “C:\Windows\Temp” on your HDD, reboot.

As said, I have just tested this. Fact.

Hopefully this will be very useful for some users if the normal firewall, proxy settings, checks fail to resolve the problem.

However, shouldn’t the Title be ‘Cause for apparent Web Shield blocking internet connection’ ?

As it isn’t the web shield blocking the internet.

Okay, changed the title.
Thanks for the hint.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for your reply Zyndstoff … Re: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57570.0

I have the registry values and the temp file where you suggested it should be, so any other help or advice would be much appreciated to try to get this sorted out.

I would like to do what you advise but I do not understand clearly what I have to do. I am not that skilled with registry and things like that. Could you provide more details on how to do it please?

You run regedit.exe and navigate to the above mentioned registry keys and check the values. These values are strings and show you, where your “Temp”-folder is expected to be.
Then check with win explorer if this folder is present.

E.g. if the values state: “%SystemRoot%\Temp”, then you should check if the folder “C:\Windows\Temp” is present on your system. If it is not, create it.

If the two keys “tmp” and “Temp” are not present in your registry, create them with regedit.exe and set the values to “%SystemRoot%\Temp”, then create the above mentioned folder with windows explorer.

Reboot.

See screenshot: regedit.exe

Whatever it takes… ;D the relentless pursuit of perfection.

Yes, I think opening up the field for more solutions as well. DavidR pointed to some others a few posts back.

I guess it never ends really, but every solution certainly makes the difference.

Hello,

I tried and it changed nothing :frowning: The two keys are present in the registry and I created a tmp folder in WINDOWS folder and inside the already exisisting TEMP folder but it changed nothing. When Avast is on, I cannot access internet.

Any other idea? :frowning:

Thanks a lot for taking time to explain the process even if it did not solve anything for me

So, the value of the keys is “%SystemRoot%\Temp” ?
And the folder "C:\Windows\Temp" is existant?

Then I can’t help any more, except maybe this: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57646.msg485911#msg485911

Yes to your questions

Last solution does not work either :frowning:

Open a new thread with a meaningful title, so others will look into it and try to help you.
There, give your sys specs and all security and firewall software running on your system.
Sorry I can’t help more than this atm.

I think the key here Mike_fra is environment.

Zyndstoff has successfully instated an environment in which webshield will not block his internet connection.

The wider problem is that each user brings to each system their own particular environment, be that what it is at that time and in that place for that particular person. There are unfortunately no universal solutions, beyond what is acknowledged as good computer practice, and what is recommended as accepted defaults and settings by manufacturers and distributors of computer hardwares and/or softwares. And even these guidelines and pointers are often only practicable to a certain extent.

Best follow Zyndstoff advise and give the forum some idea of the environment in which yr problem is being found.

Do you mean a certified world?

Unfortunate I live ‘in the wild’, outside any institution network shield - other than ISP and other mandatory

Signed both
You’re doing a good job!
Keep it up!

yes I have a video card that just wont take the driver.
performance is okay but suboptimal - I’ve tried everything i can so far think of

These things happen ???

I have discovered another cause for this problem.

I had exactly the same problem, no webpages displayed when webshield was running. I traced it down to an old copy of Norton Internet Security which I had un-installed. Although it has been uninstalled using add/remove programs it was still causing this problem.

I downloaded and ran the Norton Removal Tool and Avast webshield problem went away.
