I am running Home edition on a Windows ME machine. Under Program Settings - Update (Connections) - I check the “I only connect to the internet using a dial-up modem” checkbox and say OK. When I go back into the settings the checkmark is gone. I’m wanting to check this box because every time I start up windows it is asking for a dialup connection and I believe it is Avast updates doing it. I want to leave my internet settings to ask for a dialup connection so it will ask when I start Explorer.
avast doesn’t ask to connect, it checks for the presence of an internet connection and if there is one it will check for updates, it has no connection function. So there would appear to be something else trying to connect.
I’m on dial-up and no problems and my Internet settings are to ask and not automatically connect, that is what mine does and it is for the connecting application like firefox or mailwasher, etc. never avast.
I don’t know why your settings aren’t sticking, though I have heard of this with win98.
You can edit the [InetWD] section of the C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\avast4.ini file and add the following line if it doesn’t exist already, if it does edit the value to =1: UseRAS=1
Thanks for the input. That resolved the checkbox problem and it seems to have resolved the issue of wanting to dial up at startup.
It seems that since I have my internet settings set to dial a connection as necessary, when Avast checks for a connection it feels that it is necessary unless the dial-up setting is set in Avast.
I think resolving the ‘I’m on dial-up selection’ stops the assumption that a connection exists, so avast is checking for an update rather than checking for a connection.
It shouldn’t be happening…
As David said, avast seeks for an available connection and does NOT start or shutdown any dial-up or any other Internet connection…
