Hi all it’s me again!! Just ran a scan with Avast and found Win32 Trojan-gen and Win95 Maytas cleared them to chest, after doing detective work on the forum searches discovered they were false positives (I must be getting better) my main query is I have a few virus files in the chest other than these i.e. Revop and a few others, but I am not sure what I can actually delete I don’t know what files are safe or not, any suggestions would be appreciated. Also I recently downloaded AOL’s free Spyware programme, do you think that is giving the false positives and should I pause Avast when I run the Spyware check or should I just uninstall the AOL program ???
Susie…
It is hard for me to tell you what is and what is not good to delete. Your past actions were proper…do web research on the files in question ( I use Google).
There is always the chance that an anti-spyware tool can give you false positives. When in doubt, run the antispam tool without Avast running. It is the easiest way and minimizes the research time.
Sorry, no other way to do it without knowing what the file names are.
As for Revop…and I quote:
Revop.F is a Trojan that downloads a demo of a commercial software application and the adware Searchcentrix from a predetermined website.
Revop.F can also install other programs, such as NetTurbo.
Revop.F does not spread automatically using its own means. It needs the attacking user’s intervention in order to reach the affected computer. The means of transmission used include, among others, floppy disks, CD-ROMs, e-mail messages with attached files, Internet downloads, FTP, IRC channels, peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing networks, etc.
Revop leaves no trace, and gives no warning that it has infected the computer.
Only doing a good scan can detect its’ presence.
Good luck.
If the files are already in Chest, they are actually deleted (i.e. not present on their original location). So, if the computer works without any problems, you can certainly delete them from the Chest as well.
Thank you both very much, your help very much appreciated
