Chrome updater is a virus?

I’ve just got this message popped up. Should I complete the download? It doesn’t seem like the real chrome updater, as the real chrome updater would have not run from svchost.exe? It does look legit to me apart from the no signature, a big company like Google should put signatures on their files.

Do you have chrome64 installed ? The URL looks highly suspect as it does not appear to be a google one

I do have chrome 64bit installed for development purposes of website design. That’s what I was thinking though? Would it be possible if a techie could decompile this app or something? Chrome 41.0.2272.35 was just released 10 hours ago - it could be because of this?

Just checked my Chrome version and it is running the same version as this download - but Google Updater with the admin request prompt comes up when I opened the about Chrome page with their signature. It could well be one of their CDN servers?

I am running on my VM at the moment so if you give me the link I will download it

The link from the picture referred me to https://dl.google.com/edgedl/chrome/win/41.0.2272.35_41.0.2272.17_chome64_updater.exe . Must be a early version of Chrome (beta channel) that wasn’t signed. That what most likely caused it to trigger the avast warning. The link comes up with the official 404 page from Google. It seems to be safe

Why does chrome update from svchost.exe though? I thought it had it’s own independent updater app? Umph. Wonders me.

The link avast gave me must be one of Google’s CDN’s which is why it doesn’t look official. Seems like Avast is doing me good - it has blocked every virus I’ve seen; good job!

Glad you are happy
