cleaning up old AVG files

New member. I have win xp. I’ve been told to use the best, Avast. Used AVG for a long time. Went to uninstall and it wouldn’t. Used add/remove in windows but there’s alot left. Deleted the grisoft folder using regedit, but there’s still some leftovers. Here is my HJT log. Thanks!

Thanks…now I can try to dl avast again. Last time it wouldn’t allow Outlook Express to open. Which was AVG residue problem, I guess.

Most likely. I wouldn’t doubt it.

You may have to remove AVG, then remove avast as well with their own uninstaller http://avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Then install Avast one more time.

Again, that’s just a, “maybe.” Your computer might work just fine after doing the AVG removal only.

Uffda…I couldn’t open ie or oe after dl avast. Wouldn’t allow add/remove programs to open either. So I went to safe mode and opened add/remove and uninstalled avast. Rebooted and dl their uninstaller and did the thing in safemode. Rebooted and a window popped up with a msg about an error in actskin4.ocx. Should I now dl avast for the second time? thanks

I didn’t really look at your hijackthis log previously, because I automatically thought that AVG was the cause.

I then found this in your HJT log:

I don’t like that entry. I don’t know what it’s doing there. I’d remove that with HJT.

You should also remove this: O23 - Service: Plug and Play Device Manager ($sys$DRMServer) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32$sys$filesystem$sys$DRMServer.exe (file missing)

Have you used malwarebytes and / or superantispyware before? I would like you to download at least one of them and run a scan.

You should be able to get to most, if not all websites after removing that “proxy” entry with HJT, then you can download avast and everything else.

HJT removed the R1… , the other 023… I clicked fix twice and it’s still in the HJT. Fixed? thanks
