Hi Avast mods!

I’ve come back again!
My last encounter was the Google redirect where Essexboy helped me.

This time, an AV randomly installed itself to my computer.
After deleting the Malware with MBAM, my Avast is still dysfunctional.
It still says that I’m outdated and need to register/pay for Avast.
All of the Real-time shields are off and can’t be turned on.
Apparently I have some vulnerability in my system and I need your help again. ;D

I’ve already scanned my computer with MBAM and OTL and have my logs ready at hand!

Hope my problem this time is an easy fix too!

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

[*]Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
[*]Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

Notes:

  1. Do not mouse-click Combofix’s window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Sleeves are rolled up with snacks near the side…
This could be a nasty one.

The MBAM worked fine.
The OTL had to be booted up in Safe Mode to work it.
The ComboFix ran and rebooted itself, but it is stuck at a black screen now.
The laptop didn’t restart itself and the cursor on the black screen can’t be moved.

That means I only have the OTL log, no CF log.
I don’t have the MBAM log since I didn’t run it again after the first time.
You also said that I shouldn’t run ComboFix a second time…
So I can’t produce a log for you unless you want me to do something else.

I’m typing on another laptop with my own laptop stuck on ComboFix’s reboot.

Anything I can do to help Essexboy? ???

Ps. 11262011_163505.log is the aftermath of the OTL fix change :slight_smile:

Sorry for the double post guys. :-\

I proceeded to Cold Boot my laptop after the long black screen.
(It had a Black Screen with a cursor stuck in the middle for at least 6 hours.)

Then I turned on my Laptop again and it produced a ComboFix log! ;D

I hope this still works and can be analyzed 8)

Good day Essexboy!

Earlier I had problems clicking on shortcuts on Desktop and Start bar.
I had to “Run as Administrator” for everything.
But after your latest OTL fix, I can use the shortcuts again. ;D

Could you repair Avast now

Go to control panel > Programs and features
Select Avast and on the left scroll down and select repair

Once done let me know what problems you have remaining plus could you run a fresh OTL scan please

Repair has failed.
There was a message that popped up.
I attached the log of what it says too. :-\

OK Download a fresh copy of Avast to your desktop
Uninstall Avast using programmes and features and the removal tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Reinstall Avast then let me know of any remaining problems

Re the repair failure:
You could try a Manual update of the avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 31MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

Note: Ignore the file name in the images of the page that is displayed after clicking the download link, they are for the main program, not for vpsupd.exe which will be downloaded.

Though a clean reinstall as essexboy suggests should achieve the same outcome, a bit longer but should certainly resolve the problem

Thanks for your suggestion!
I read it too late and proceeded with Essexboy’s path.
I uninstalled and reinstalled via Safe Mode.

Then I ran another OTL all users scan and produced this log. ;D

Edit : Antivirus is working good again. I just reregistered.
Not sure about anything else nasty that enjoyed their stay a little too long. :-X

Wow everything looks like it’s fine!

I ran a quick scan with Avast and MBAM and both came out clean.

The shortcuts for icons on desktop/start-bar is working again.

There is no window that pops up asking IE to be the default browser anymore.

Everything looks good at the moment! 8)

I think it’s nearing our cleanup and farewell stage again…

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean :thumbsup:

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix
.

[*]Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
[*]In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the “x” and “/”) then click OK

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

[] It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point

[*]Go to Control Panel and select System
[*]Select System
[*]On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
[*]Select System Protection Tab
[*]Select Create at the bottom
[*]Type in a name i.e. Clean
[*]Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones

[*]GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
[*]Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
[*]Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
[*]For a few moments the system will make some calculations
[*]Select the More Options tab
[*]In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
[*]Select Delete on the pop up
[]Select OK
[]Select Delete
