Compatibility Mode Question and Complaint

I installed the free version in “compatibility mode” to co-exist with MS Security Essentials. Then upgraded to the paid version of Avast, removed MSE, and went to get out of compatibility mode. There doesn’t seem to be an option. So, is the only way to get out of compatibility mode to remove and reinstall?

If that’s the case, it should be clearly noted somewhere as it seems reasonable to expect a way within the software to turn on all shields without reinstalling.

And even more importantly–when in compatibility mode, AVAST shows a status of “Secured” and All Shields Are On! There’s essentially no hint that you are not running most shields unless you explicitly check your shield controls–many users aren’t going to know to do that. There needs to be a clear notice both on the Avast taskbar notification menu and in Avast itself that you are running in compatibility mode. It would be waaaay to easy for a user to remove their primary AV at some later date and, based on those AVAST status messages (“System Protected”, “All shields ON”) never realize they are running with essentially no shields at all!

  • Which avast!..?? (Pro/IS)
  • Which version…??
  • OS…?? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP…?)
  • Other security related software installed…??

[i]Sorry, I didn’t realize that info had any applicability whatsoever to this question. So, IS vs Pro also makes a difference in how you disable compatibility mode?

And 32 vs 64 bit windows makes a difference too?

And the Service Pack you’re on makes a difference?!

Wow! Live and learn! Here you go! Good thing you asked!

IS
Version: Whatever the current, downloadable today, one is (as I’m not in front of it at the moment).
Platform: Win 7 64, sp 1
MSE as mentioned in the OP, no other security software.

So, did you uninstall MSE already…?? If not, please do so. Then:

  1. Download avast! Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
  2. Follow instructions: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (Run this tool for all prior installed avast! versions…!!)
  3. Reinstall avast! with the downloaded installer from point 1.
  4. Reboot.
