computer freezes

I really don’t know what is happening. My laptop freezes at different times with different programs. I shut down and start up and she works fine. I dont really know how to approach the problem. I sometimes think it is because she is hot. it doesn’t happen early into my session. Should I reinstall windows or is it a hard drive problem
Since i use this computer in the winter when we go to europe, I want to make sure it works well. How can I start to examine the problem?
Please help before the problem escatalates.

I suggest two things:

  1. See Windows Events if anything strange is happening: two many errors, etc.
  2. Monitor through Task Manager which program is using more resources (CPU & Virtual RAM Memory).

Well, three things, post here

I am having a lot of errors and the source seems to be Service Control Manager in Event Viewer/System. there are a couple everyday and also some warnings for Browser and dhcp. I never get a Blue Screen of Death, but the computer screen either shows a pattern or goes white. I have to power off and restart to use my mouse.
I did just upgrade my memory to over 600 MB from 256 but the problem had occured before I did that.
The last time it happened, I had double clicked a html file to open it. Another time I was at a website and sending an email to the administrator. It is now happening a few times a week.
I will keep monitoring it and see what happens in the event log next time it happens.

Thank you Tech.
