Computer not booting and aswrvrt.sys

Hi there,
Today my computer started refusing to boot. It gets as far as past the “Starting Windows” screen (Win 7 home) and then, instead of a login screen the screen remains black (but powered on).
When I try safe mode, The last file to load is aswrvrt.sys, it hangs for a bit then proceeds to the login screen for 5 seconds and then restarts for no reason.

I read an older thread (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=120531.0) about an issue with that and was hoping someone can help me troubleshoot this.

Thanks

Could you create an FRST log please

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. Rufus

For 64bit systems
2. Windows 7 64bit RC
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

For 32bit systems
2. Windows 7 RC
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please attach it to your reply.

New member here, so I apologize for “hi-jacking” this thread. I had an identical issue to that of the original poster. I followed the instructions that were provided but when starting from USB after the starting windows screen I got a black screen and was unable follow the rest of the steps (command screen etc.) because I couldn’t get that far. Advice to proceed?

Thanks in advance.

What operating system do you have and what happened prior to the boot issue

Operating system is Windows 7. Prior to boot issue my computer had been in sleep mode. I woke it to start work and it woke but was kind of sluggish. Web browser (firefox) froze when I was trying to read emails. Closed browser then my whole computer froze. Did a hard restart and boot issue started from there.

How old is the computer, as that sounds like a drive or RAM problem

It’s about 2 1/2 years old.
