computer slows/freezes when online

I couldn’t do anything online for awile. I can now only because I have avast distabled. I was going to reinstall it, but when I tried it wouldn’t let me. The avast problem closes when I clink on something to do with the database.

 Hi :

More info is needed for us to possibly help you, like the NAME of the Operating System, the
NAME(S) of any security program(s) and if recently you had an antiVIRUS program other than
Avast, its Name and what "steps" you took to get it off the computer .

ok, I’m using windows xp. I’ve used avast for several years with no problem. before that I think we had Mcafee and Norton. To uninstall programs I go control panal and use the add remove problems thing thats there.

i don’t know if this would help any but Ev1 was switching us to PeoplePC so about a week or two before this started happening I installed their software. I don’t think its the problem cause I uninstalled and tried getting online with Ev1. and still had the same problem.

Generally, that is not enough.

To remove McAfee you need to do via Add/Remove and then the manual removal of the registry keys left behind with their on-line instructions.
They’ve released VSCleanupTool to do that either, just go to http://www.us.mcafee.com and click the Tech Support tab (provide your version number in Step 1 and select install/uninstall in Step 2). You can go to their user forum at http://www.forums.mcafeehelp.com if you should have problems or questions.
Check http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=20560.msg172602#msg172602 also.
Mcafee uninstall tool: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe

  1. Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot. If you have already done, go to 2.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info or here.
  3. Boot.
  4. Uninstall avast / Boot / Install avast! again / Boot.
  5. See what you get.

You can find many free versions of registry cleaners here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/system/fwregtools.html

Uninstalling then reinstalling avast! might help.

9 times out of 10 this works when faced with a misbehaving computer program.

 Hi Faith :

I had PeoplePC as my ISP for a very short period of time a couple of yrs ago; nothing but
problems. You MAY want to read other people's experiences with them at :
 www.freedomlist.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14895&highlight=peoplepc . Saw some
comments about "ev1" in some of the Posts there .

ok, I can’t find NAV in add/remove programs. Symantec removal tool sounds familiar but I can’t remember what it is. I did remember it was my grandfather who installed Avast and uninstalled Mcafee. He tends to know whats he doing when it comes to computers so he may have completly uninstalled it. I’m not sure.

  1. If it was there, you shoud remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel first. Boot.
  2. Use Symantec removal tool following the three steps defined in the SymNRT tool info or here.
  3. Boot.
  4. Install avast! Boot.
  5. See what you get.
