For a while I have read the claims / rumors that there is no more registration required. My current avast installation of 12.3.2280 is now officially expired. As per the 1st attached image, there is the in yer face scare tactic that I am UNPROTECTED. In the 2nd image, there is an example of the expiration countdown daily warnings that I received for like the last week or slightly longer. It clearly states in there that registration is required with the standard protection. Even the avast icon in the System Tray is X-ed out and sans animation.
Yet when I click on the link to acquire a registration form, I am informed that older versions of avast will continue to work even when registration expires. So what is truth and what is myth? You know … given that the GUI throws an unavoidable “UNPROTECTED” in my face and the avast icon in the System Tray is dead.
If everything is OK … shouldn’t some update in a daily virus definition update neutralize those 2 things? Actually, that avast Expiration Warning should also be done away with … shouldn’t it. It’s based on something that apparently isn’t true and yet will no doubt strong arm many users into switching to the paid version when they don’t have to.
