I installed AVAST! and immediately, I lost my sign on ability with Yahoo Messenger. Help
What is your firewall ?
Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Try terminating the Web Shield and see if that helps.
I have my firewall OFF - permanantly. It was a windows Firewall. I am using XP.
I have SPYBlocker, which I uninstalled after installing AVAST! I used the Windows UNINSTALL feature.
So what are you using as a firewall (an essential part of your security) ?
I had never heard of SpyBlocker before this and the windows XP firewall even if On doesn’t monitor outbound connections so shouldn’t be getting in the way.
So other than spyblocker, which I presume is an anti-spyware rather than an anti-virus, did you have any anti-virus installed on this system ?
Even after an uninstall many leave remnants and these can cause conflicts.
Presumably other than Yahoo you could browse other web sites ?
Did you try terminating the web shield ?
So what are you using as a firewall (an essential part of your security) ? I am not using a FireWall. I had Norton years ago but it conflicted with programs so I uninstalled it. Windows Firewall conflicted with a program I used and I disconnected it last year. No problems what so ever with those decisions.

Did you try terminating the web shield ? I do not know what a “Web Shield” is.
How do I completely and totally remove AVAST! from my computer. Not partially… but completly. I see posts where people have had remnants of AVAST left in their system which causes problems.
Thank you
The web shield is an avast shield to protect against malware on the internet, it monitors your http traffic. Left click on the avast ‘a’ icon the avast on-access scanner window pops up, click the Details… >> button if present. Now all Shields will be displayed, select the Web Shield and Terminate it. You will be asked if you want to persist the change, answer No for now.
Try the connecting to Yahoo Messenger. I’m not to hopefully that this will make any difference.
I now want you to terminate the Instant Messaging shield as that to could have an impact on the ability to use Yahoo, though in the forums I haven’t heard of this being a problem.
Try connecting with Yahoo Messenger again. If that works select the Web Shield again, but this time click the Start button and answer Yes to the question.
Generally there isn’t a problem in removing all of avast using the Windows add remove program uninstall, but there is a tool if there is a problem.
Norton can be a real pig to remove and there are many more posts in these forums relating to that than avast.
A link worth looking at, which is a program removal tool that can remove the remnants of a number of different Norton Programs:
