Constant PC restart after Avast 5 Free program update

Hi there, I had a strange problem with Avast today.

After I updated Avast 5 Free to version 5.1.864, the program asked me to reboot Windows, and I clicked “Yes”. After Windows XP boot screen, the standard blue “welcome” screen didn’t appear - the computer just restarted itself, again, and again, indefinitely. Then I entered the Safe Mode, and disabled all Avast services in MSConfig. That didn’t solve the problem, so I uninstalled Avast - the problem was solved. Any explanation on this? :-\

Try latest version of Avast. 5.1.874 it has a number of fixes for .864

Free AV: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/5.0.874/setup_av_free.exe

Isuggest uninstall .864 via Add and Remove Programs and install .874 Clean from installer :slight_smile:

.874? Then why Avast update offered me only .864, and reports it as “up to date”?

.874 is a pre-release (kinda like a beta) version…

The update from GUI of version .864 to .874 it’s not available. (see reason above)

Yes, Pre-Release builds are for testing purposes. Such builds are never offered with Avast! update :wink:

Because 5.1.874 is a pre-release build for those who are experiencing certain problems with 5.1.864, it is effectively a fix that you can try to see if it resolves your problem. It isn’t currently available on the regular program update path.

Thanks, I just found the downloads for .874 version… But since I’ve solved the problem with PC restarting, I’ll keep .864 to see how long will it last :slight_smile: Thanks anyway!
