corrupted archive

Have been trying to get a good copy of Avast Home but keep getting the same message when trying to install: An error 1006 (000003EE) has occured. Last performed operation was: opening the self-extract archive (then instructions to download again)
Getting the same thing one files from Avast, Filehippo, cnet, major geeks, et al. Doesn’t matter if I download from IE, FF, use a download manager… nothing makes any difference.
After the packages are on my hdd, the self-extractor tries to run. Then I get an error log that tells me this:

I have no idea what all that means but this is really getting my goat! Any ideas? Same responses when in windows and when in safe mode.

Some infections prevent avast installation.
Read the instructions, download and burn (maybe from another computer), finally use one of this rescue CD’s:

  1. Avira
  2. Kaspersky
  3. BitDefender
  4. F-Secure
  5. Dr. Web

But, before, are you using any other antivirus? Was in the past?

I have been using AVG8 free and Threatfire as my firewall. Have never gone without av protection before. Scans by AVG and housecall don’t show anything at all. Am running Kaspersky now but nothing is showing up. (my cd died waaaay back around Christmas and haven’t had a chance to replace it.)
I am considering having one of the kids try downloading Avast on their machines and see if they get it to go. If they do, is it possible to install the program on a memory stick and run it from there?
Getting the program up and running is vital because I telecommute and my employer is insisting everyone needs to use specific av programs. If I can’t get this going I will lose my job. Needless to say, I’m worried and increasingly frustrated.

ThreatFire is a behavior blocker, not a firewall.
Did you fully remove AVG and Kaspersky before installing avast? Did you use their special uninstall tools?
AVG Remover can be downloaded here: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

No, avast needs to be installed in a fixed disk.

I would have liked to continue using Zone Alarm but the blasted program became a bloated monster.

What I am going to do is have one of the kids burn me a recovery disc. I will install a new burner and see how this goes.

I have become convinced over the last hours that I do indeed have a virus. Although AVG and Housecall both completed with no results, Kaspersky couldn’t complete, I can’t completely download F-Prot nor Sophos nor any of the disc images for the recovery discs mentioned above.

Once I find out what’s sitting on my hdd and get this system cleaned up, will report back.
As an offhand comment, I find it interesting that the situation was as bad in safe mode as in full. Would that give you a clue as to what is happening?

Thanks for you help! It’s much appreciated.

kwkslvr, can you download from other computer and burn the CD from it, using after that on the infected computer?

I woosed out. Have a professional networking-tech-geek guy living across the street. It’s his day off so I took the blasted computer over to him. He’s either going to replace the cdroms or get them working again, then figure out what’s wrong with the computer.

I am using my laptop and have it hooked up to the router. Will see if I can successfully download Avast on this machine. It is possible that, even if something is wrong with the desktop, it’s my router that is going bad. It’s a netgear and we’ve been using it for over 4 years. My ISP tells me that my signal is good and we shouldn’t be having problems with any downloads nor any connection problems. Never the less, we are, so it’s something internal here. I attempted to update my anti-malware program a couple of hours ago and got that same “corrupt file” message. Tried it again a few minutes ago and it worked fine… sigh

Am currently running a complete system scan on this machine using AVG8 just to hedge my bets. Will report back on the Avast procedure…

Will here to help if you need.

Well, (insert profanity.) Same error message: 1006 self-extract archive.

Have emailed the error message to my neighbor to see what he makes of it. I will try downloading some other programs to see if the same thing happens.

I forgot to mention that I also tried to download the last release of Avast version 7.*, a much smaller file. Got the exact same error message on that, too. This is really starting to bother me… you’d think that over a period of 5 days, at various times of day and night, from various mirrors and servers, just ONE installation package would be OK. Makes no sense at all to me.
Trying the download on the other desktop here. Will report back.

The mystery deepens. DS2 downloaded the installation file to his computer. Successfully! Copied it to my memory stick and I just used that copy to install Avast.

Successfully.

He and I use the same router connection and he’s been having problems with connection issues, too, as well as corrupt downloads. Rather confounding, isn’t it? Will reboot in a couple of minutes and use Avast to do a boot scan. If something shows up, will report back.

We will figure out what is going on eventually. For now, I am happy to have the installation program on the cruzer. Now, a question… is there a limit to the number of times the installation program can be run? Once I get my desktop back I fully intend to install the program on that and uninstall from this laptop. Maybe I will keep my job after all! WOOT!

No.

The problem you’re experiencing could be a symptom of infection…

Hi kwkslvr

If you haven’t downloaded these two (or either of these) spyware programs, they both work well as support to avast. You could run mbam anyway. May help.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Houston, we have liftoff! Ladies and gentlemen, the boot scan showed a js trojan: fakeav-ab, as well as two associated files. I know exactly where those came from and who allowed them to land on my laptop… DS3. He is the only person here who uses IE. Avast stowed the little buggers in the chest. Since he also uses my desktop on occasion, I believe running an Avast boot scan of that machine will show the same infection (or something very similar). I should have suspected something of the sort, due to the supposedly “corrupt” executables. AVG didn’t catch them as I didn’t run an MBR/boot scan. duh…

You folks are the best. Thanks for hanging in with me while I figured out what was happening. Your attention and thoughtfulness are appreciated very much.

Thank you.
