Any other security (related) software installed ? (or was there)
Already performed a repair of avast ?
Already performed a clean installation of the latest avast version ?
etc.
When does this locking up happen ?
Are you using any other security based software installed ?
What are your system specs CPU and RAM ?
program version 17.3.2291 (build 17.3.3443.00)
virus definitions version 170404-0
windows xp home sp3
2 gig of ram
intel T2300
no other security software installed
all ready done a repair of avast
crashing any time with any program you run
I think that there is a relatively large jump from 11.1.2245.1540 to the new 17.3.2.64257 version. With new or updated components. With
Whilst I have consistently updated on this XP Pro system I started of with what was one of the top CPUs at the time, but I only had 2GB of DDR2 RAM (at the time it was ‘who could use all of this RAM’) but I soon updated it to 4GB the max for XP 32bit. I did notice an improvement in over system performance, not just on the AV and it is still handling things OK.
But I think you are right on the edge with your CPU and RAM - with that CPU, is this a laptop ?
If so I’m not sure if you can update the RAM to4GB.
I would say perform a really clean installation of the latest avast version.
The CPU does support SSE2 instructions so it should work.
Saying that, avast claims it still fully support Windows XP with SP3 installed on systems that support the SSE2 instructions set, it does not.
Certain parts of (the newer/latest versions) are not working on those systems.
thanks done a new install with no look so I will have to remove it.!!
any recommendations for a replacement it has been a first class software used it for years with no problems
update removed it tried with out any antivirus laptop still locking up must have replace some windows system files so I will have to restore it from my back up
Have you managed to fix it?
I would say run some hardware diagnostic tools like memtest and see if they find something.
yes restored it from my backup from beginning of march now running ok with the old version of avast on and I have stopped it up dating it self now working fine
Glad you’ve fixed it, horrible to be without a computer.
Understand your reasons for wanting it, have done the same myself in the past…but be careful with that old version of Avast, could leave your computer vulnerable to malware.

“There is a good reason why it is best to use latest version, malware constantly change and so does the technology needed to detect.”
It’s also worth noting that any version older than v17 is vulnerable to Double Agent. There is no behavior shield too and certain detections are only possible on v17.
Up date despite having set it not to update the program yesterday it has and now back to as it was, they must be able to over rule the settings you have on your computer not good, even with it disabled computer very slow to do everything it must over right some windows files or registry entrees that make it slow so I will have to do a recovery again and this time will have to look for another antivirus that will work with xp
