I read through the conglomeration of old advice turned into a circus and didn’t learn anything, Maybe I should Google it, but I would like to know what you experts consider necessary anti-spyware, free and simple. I’ve read that some of the recommendations have changed as it is harder to keep up with the malware, so it seems a good question, and there are several waiting for me to pass on your good advice!
Not an expert, but this is my advice.
For resident, something like spywareblaster. It won’t remove anything, but will alert you something is trying to get into your system, For on demand, Superantispyware is probably the best right now.
Both have free versions. Both have paid versions. The above is for the free.
Spywareblaster doesn’t alert you, it simply prevents AS infection.
A free AS on real time is Spyware Terminator(without Web security Guard, you can uncheck it wheen you install ST)
I’ve got the three programs:
Spywareblaster
ST on real time
SuperAntySpywware on demand.
Sorry, I stand corrected, I thought spywareblaster did alert when something was trying to install.
The best free real-time antispywares are Spyware Terminator & Windows Defender (XP & Vista).
To use Spyware Terminator functions you need to have one of the following operating systems installed on your computer:
Spyware Scanner: MS Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP 32-bit, XP 64-bit, Vista 32-bit and Vista 64-bit
Real-time Protection MS Windows 2000, XP 32-bit and Vista 32-bit
SUPERAntiSpyware free is the best on-demand scanner.
avast! 4.8beta has a built in real-time anti-spyware that uses the same engine with anti-virus. The Home Edition is free. According to scans with SUPERAntiSpyware free, avast! 4.8beta is an excellent anti-spyware.
Agree with Superantispyware for a good free demand scanner. It’s also a very good value for money resident. Very highly regarded.
SpywareBlaster is also highly regarded, uses no resource, and falls into the category of immuniser. It prevents known bad sites from loading. Just manually check for updates every week or two.
I’m not an expert, either, but know enough to know that what is “necessary” depends entirely on the user, and what the computer is used for. Antivirus, SpywareBlaster, and a scan every so often with a good AS is probably adequate for a lot of folk. Doing any credit card stuff online, or have any sensitive info on the 'pooter, wise to learn a bit more, and have a bit more; that is, a couple of extra layers of security. There’s all sorts of stuff - free too - that can further safeguard your important bits and pieces. Might require a bit of learning to use, though.
Maybe you’re thinking about the somewhat out-of-date SpywareGuard, by the same author?

No, I could have sworn that I read spywareblaster would warn you. However, I readily accept the correction. 8)

Thank you all; I’m working on these — by the way, what is Zone Alarm Spy Blocker? And does it count as an antispyware?
Most probably… but I don’t think it’s better than avast protection that you already has.
I have both of them, I just didn’t know anything about the Zone Alarm Spyblocker; it was there with the last update. Avast and Zone Alarm get along well on this machine; I’ve had both for years.
