I searched on here and cant find what I need. MBAM does not get rid of it.
It is on a friends PC and it comes up every time he boots up. It wont uninstall through add/remove programs. He can close it and it seems to go away until next boot. It is more annoying (I think) than harmful but I cant tell.
What I read said it might be impossible to get rid of without reloading windows.
hey do a scan with OTL and post the result here. so our malware expert could have a look on it when he is online.
Download OTL to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
When I searched with Google what I mostly found is more trash AV programs that are just like CyberDefender. I did find the safe mode idea and he is going to try that today.
If that doesnt work I will get him to send me the OTL logs.
Attach (using the Additional Options), otherwise it will take many, many posts to do that as there is a character restriction. Not only that it is harder for you to do and for the poor sap trying to analyse it.
After running the uninstaller in Safe mode as Pondus recommended, also do the additional procedures stated in this link: http://www.ehow.com/how_5848844_fix-cyber-defender-uninstall.html referenced in the same article. Appears CyberDefender has multiple components and each has to be separately uninstalled. Then any residuals have to manually removed.
BTW - CyberDefender is not malware. That is why MBAM did not remove it. I classify it as “greyware.” Falls into the category of anti-malware that scans only in free edition but will not remove malware unless you pay for a license. There sure are a lot of complaints against the outfit: http://www.complaintsboard.com/complaints/cyberdefender-c95821.html
Thanks, I will look for the additional components and add-ins HOWEVER I am not a big fan of “Registry Fixit” programs so I will pass on that part.
I consider any program that wont unstall itself using its own unistaller and that constantly bugs you for money to be a nasty virus. Everyone has theirs own classifications however ;D
