Hello. I’m using Windows XP SP3 I believe.
I had a message pop up earlier saying Avast prevented something from opening. I don’t recall what it stopped because the name was all numbers. I do recall it was kernel32.dll which tried to open it, which I know is infected because I’ve been having issues with it all day. Anyways, I scheduled a boot-time scan in the hopes that it could clean the file of whatever was infecting it, but after I restarted my computer it shows the Compaq screen then goes to a black screen with the little line blinking in the top left. I’ve tried going into safe mode, tried doing a system recovery, and tried running the Windows disk but none of those work, it just shows the same screen. The only things I can do is open the boot menu and open setup, which I don’t believe that either of those can help me.
If anyone can provide any information on how to solve, or at least get around this I would be very grateful.
If you think that the computer is infected, can get to the boot menu and have access to USB flash drive then download MSFT Standalone System Sweeper to the USB drive. Insert the USB drive into the infected computer and boot. When you get to the boot menu select to boot from the USB flash drive and run MSSS.
see the two links below for more including specific instructions on running MSSS. Note even though the thread below is on a Windows 7 forum MSSS also runs on XP
HI

Access to bios is either f1 or del key! on some machines.
If you can get cd rom to work try repair of xp using xp cd.
