Default - mail scanner

Am using the Avast 4/ZA Firewall combo - at least giving it a try

Was surprised to find on installation of Avast that it had default of delivering infected mail to inbox - also the Internet Mail part of it made no attempt to hook to Thunderbird - it just said it was dormant and waiting to start. There have to be more than a few people who don’t go to ‘set it up’)

The Webscan feature is told by Avast to be a known problem and they are working with ZA - meanwhile they disable it during installation themselves (if they are doing all that on their own - really surprised - again - that they let someone install their software and then leave it non-scanning email - and delivering infected mails to Inbox - a bit crazy)

The default action if showing you an alert of virus. If you change the ‘Advanced’ settings of Internet Mail provider to ‘Silent Mode’ you’ll send the infected mail to Chest.
There is not a ‘default’ option to deliver the infected mail into the inbox (in Home version).

Only the ZA Pro (the Privacy features) has problems with avast. The free doesn’t. Which one do you use?

Well what you say is what I would have expected from the program.

But I swear that I did absolutely nothing after I installed - and THEN went to look at what were the settings, assumptions, etc.

And indeed it said

1. it was sending infected mail to inbox (I had to change it)
2. I went to the ‘Internet Mail’ part of the Scanner - and it was set to ‘dormant’ (or some other such phrase - and I had to change it to active.

As said - this is hardly what one would expect of an AV program after installing to be its initial (default) settings

I’m using ZA Free - but on installing Avast the procedure noted that webscan was not compatible and they were working with ZA on it - maybe they were referring to the Pro - they didn’t say

Infected or detected as Souspicious (by the Heuristic mail scanner)?

Probably due to an old antivirus installation that was not properly removed… AVG mail scanner?

avast! Web Shield compatibility dialogue - Install/Update Question - YES or NO

If you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy. Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case). Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line. Save the edited avast4.ini file.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast comptability dialog box the transparent mode proxy in webshield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet.
