I know in version 4.8 you could edit the ini file to delay the auto update. My old XP needs a little help. I looked but couldn’t find it in XP with version 5. Is there a way delay the auto update like in 4.8.
Joe
I think you should be able to do it with the avast5.ini file. For XP try this address: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5, or just search for avast5.ini. It has the same [InetWD] category that 4.8 had where you make these changes.
There’s a thread here with instructions for 4.8; it’s probably the same for 5. But it might be a good idea to leave the connection type alone (i.e. AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 or UseRAS=1); if it’s already configured and working okay just add the amount of delay you want and save.
I fear that delay update method doesn’t work in avast 5.0 as I have tried it on dial-up.
Changing the UseRAS from =0 to =1 indicates you are using dial-up and would screw the auto update up completely I believe.
I don’t know if changing AssumeAlwaysConnected=0 to AssumeAlwaysConnected=1 would have the same effect by screwing up the auto update as it did when I tried setting the UI to indicate dial-up connection (UseRAS=1).
David, have you tried the pre-release?
This may help you with your setting…
I think avast4.ini settings were “mature” even on early versions 4.
I do not recommend just using them for avast 5 without further knowledge of what you’re doing…
No, there is no way I would download almost 40MB on dial-up just to check it either ;D
It is a pain in the rear, but not that much as to consider two and a half hour download to check it out. So I’m happy to wait for when build .454 is released and do a incremental program update.
Oh yeah…I forgot…![]()
Tech,
You think so?
I thought most of the settings in there were simply transferred from 4?
I thought most of the settings in there were simply transferred from 4?
I don’t expect an official confirmation of that… so, how can we know which values are valid and which ones were dropped?
I found the ini file and down near bottom it says assume always connected right under that it says update period. I tried changing that value and will see how that works.
Joe
The Update Period is the interval in minutes between update attempts, the default is 240. If I understood your original post you want to cause a delay between the time your system starts and when avast! attempts to download updates. If that’s the case, Update Period won’t do it. If it’s not already there, you’ll need to create a new entry right under [InetWD]; if you’re always connected it should be:
AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
If on dial-up:
RASWaitSeconds=120
120=seconds; you can adjust it to whatever you want. But this may or may not work. These are the settings for avast! 4.8 and 5 may be different. But it shouldn’t hurt anything to try. Just keep an eye on it an see if it works. If something goes wrong you can go back and delete it. It shouldn’t do anything drastic like cause your system not to boot.
