Hi,
Running Free 4.8 upto date defs etc on XP Home SP3 with Zonealarm. Normally update manually each day and no probs for years. Now avast has to retry many times to obtain a connection, which it eventually does and defs are then updated. Is there a system problem with avast server ?
Tried updating on 2nd PC and same result so suspect problem not malware etc.
Cheers, Dave
Can you delete avast.setup from the ZA settings, boot, allow it again.
Sometimes, it’s just a firewall glitch.
Hi Tech,
Sorry for delay in coming back. Reset permissions in ZA but still problem as follows.
I normally initiate the def update for avast manually by right clicking the a icon. This immediately produces an info box, “Downloading Packages” indicating downloading files. But recently, it now takes tens of seconds to show this box and then there is more delay connecting to the avast server which is unusual. However, if left to its own devices, it eventually completes the download. Once a download is complete, if I repeat the process and initiate another download, there is then no delay before the info box appears but connection to the server still takes more time than usual and it obviously tries many times without success. Eventually, if left, it will get there.
I suspected there was a problem with AdAware Pro which I had recently updated. Uninstalling AdAware with RevoUninstaller has cured the avast delay problem, I am following up with AdAware. Thanks for your help, Cheers Dave
If an avast.setup process is running (i.e., you’ve already started an update), all new updates are blocked.
Ad-aware is an old boy… I think it does not add protection anymore. There are new tools (like MBAM).
Thanks for that. In fact, uninstalling AdAware was not a permanent fix, system has reverted to delays in running setup and connecting. However, once updating completed, delays disappear. Understand lock out of new update request. Thanks for your suggestions but rather than waste more of your time, will just accept delays while I think of alternative approaches Cheers, dave
Glad to say, this issue has been resolved as a ZoneAlarm issue with Antiphishing. If Antiphishing control is turned off, connection delay for downloading defs disappears. Turning it back on reintroduces delay and ZA have noted it as a problem. Have to say support from ZA with their LiveChat was extremely good since this was a difficult issue to pin down. Cheers, Dave
datgrays,
Since your issue is now resolved/fixed, please go back to the open post in this topic, click the modify button in that Post and change the title/subject, add [Resolved] to the beginning of the title so this thread can be closed. Thank you.
