Delete subdirectories

C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Browser\Application\DEFS
Under this path there are a large number of directories that take up large amount of space. Are al these directories nessesary or may they be removed?

First, I’m an Avast user and not an Avast Team member.
You don’t say what Avast Program and version number you are using ?

A screenshot may help to get a better understanding. They should be periodically removed by Avast as new VPS updates come in. Avast would probably protect against these being moved manually.

I generally have a few, usually the current, previous and the Streaming updates for Virus Pattern Signatures.
The previous one is empty, the current one

You could try a system restart to see if that clears some of the debris.

Thank You for the answer! Considering the path I provided, the program should be Secure Browser. There are 186 subdirecotries under DEFS. Each directory have a timestamp as name where the oldest is 3 month back. Is it safe to delete the older ones?

My apologies for my incorrect rushed reply. Why it would be doing this seems counter productive that it doesn’t appear to act in the same way as the main programs virus definitions. For example Avast’s Web Shield protects other Web Browsers from within the Avast main program, without having to do it in this way.

I don’t use the Avast Secure Browser, but given it is within the C:\Program Files\AVAST Software, I suspect Avast would try to protect against deletion unless you disable the Avast Self Defence setting in the main program.

I would first suggest clearing the Avast Secure Browser, cache and see if that makes any difference
