deleting emails goes very slow

Windows 2000, my internet connection is DSL

i am using Thunderbird as email programm und now installed avast 4.6 as antivirus programm. Everything works very good, but deleting an email takes a very long time. Not the scanning of the email while incomming! When I downloaded an email, read it and may be after 3 days, I want to delete it, then the time of the deleting is very long.
Any other email-features are working very well, i’m very satisfied with avast !

Now I checked the providers and found, when I take “Standard shield Provider” out of duty, then the deleting goes in a way, I want to have.

Now my question:
Which problems may I have, when I don’t use the Standard Shield Provider? I have no idea, what this providers makes at all.
After the deaktivation of this provider, the resident provider works any more, I can scan my computer very well.

Do I make a mistake, when I let the provider “Standard Shield Protector” out of duty?

Sorry I’ve got no answer to your question: I use TB with Avast! for a long time now without any PB…
I hope someone here would be able to answer you :-\

Standard Shield is the main resident provider, it scans your files and all parts of your system when opening files, running programs, etc.
It’s the most important provider.

Sure, it is the resident protection!
Of course you can scan. On-demmand scanning is not the same as the resident one (on-access).
