Dell c600 latitude freezes on standby

Hey there,

I found a post very similar to what I am experiencing…
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=17684.0

My Dell laptop can perform a standby flawlessly when I either stop on-access protection, or stop the standard shield and web shield. But, if these providers are running when I try to do a standby either by the power/standby button or a standby shortcut, my laptop screen goes black, the wifi card stays lit, and the computer stays on. Then, I cannot do anything to bring it back, and must hold the power button to do a complete hard shutdown.

These two providers (standard shield and web shield) are preventing the standby command -
"%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState
from performing completely on this Dell laptop.

Is there a solution to this that does not require me to manually right-click, “stop on-access protection” every time I want to do a standby? I rarely shut down this laptop, choosing standby instead.
Is there a fix?

I like the product, but I’m afraid that I’m going to toast my hard drive one of these times when I forget to do the “stop on-access protection” and have to drop the system with a hard shutdown.

Cheers,

Pb

I just determined that if I pause the standard shield provider, I can do a proper standby. So, does this mean that the service is fine, but that the standard shield provider in active mode is the culprit?

Perhaps the standard shield provider is scanning the “rundll32.exe powrprof.dll” standby command, and there’s where the rub lies?

  1. What OS are you using?
  2. Your saying that it’s enough to pause the Standard Shield provider. That’s interesting. Pausing the provider is more or less equivalent to unchecking all its settings (on its first and second config page). Could you please try to find out which of the settings is responsible for the problem? (scan on open, scan on close, scan on exec etc.)

Thanks

Oops.

Avast! is off the hook.

I should know better. I uninstalled avast, but problem persisted.

I’m updating my bios as I type.

If I’m not back, then that’s a GOOD thing!

Thanks!

Well, my problem appears to be a flaky Linksys wrt54gs v.2 pc card.

I popped in a different card, and was in standby heaven.

Back to enjoying Avast!

Thanks!
