Laptop updated last night and now won’t boot. Hangs up at various places, but usually ends up on a black screen. Tried starting in safe mode, and it hangs up after loading drivers. Tried the startup repair option and got same result. Ran FRST and am attaching logs. Appreciate any help you can provide.
if able to, also attach a OTL diagnostic log. ( not copy and paste)
you find it here. http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0
if trouble running it you may try run it from safe mode
log experts are notified… it may take some time before they arrive
Was this after the windows update ?
From the recovery console can you select a restore point prior to this
This was after the update. I did a system restore to the point prior to the update. It allowed me to get farther and appeared to be working but then froze after the windows logon screen and eventually went to black screen with cursor again. I can’t get far enough in to copy OTL to the desktop and run it. Can I run it from USB drive like the FRST? If so, how?
I will remove Avast, however, windows has set a few additional elements to run once at start. If need be I can try to remove those next
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press Fix
Once completed return to normal windows
I ran that fix and attempted to start windows normally. It has been stuck on the Microsoft Corporation logo with the animated bar for the last 10 minutes.
OK I will now remove the run once keys and see if that works
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix
Once completed retry a normal boot
Ran that one. Still hangs on Microsoft Corporation screen. Thank you for your continued help on this!
Unfortunately there is little I can do now, as all other drivers etc. are windows required files.
Ok Thank you for trying. If you think of any other avenues I can attempt, please let me know.
Unfortunately all I can suggest is to backup the data you need and reinstall vista. I have a programme that will help you backup data
Can you direct me to that program? That sounds like what I need to do at this point. Thank you.
Download Peazip to the desktop
Run and install the programme
As it installs this page will show, deselect the AVG ticks
Press decline and it will then install cleanly

Download the following files to the desktop … Right click the links and select save as…then select desktop
Right click OTLPE on your desktop and select …Open as archive

Select OTLPE standard
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/select%20archive.PNG
Click Extract, ensure that desktop is selected

Insert the USB stick Then run Rufus

Select the ISO file on the desktop via the ISO icon.
Press Start Burn

Once the USB has burnt then boot the sick system from this and it will give you a reatogo desktop (like XP)
From this desktop you cany copy files/data/photos etc to a second partition, USB or CD
Thank you. I got the data I needed off of the sick computer and am reinstalling Vista now. I appreciate all of your help.
Sorry I could not get you back to normal. The last few windows updates appear to be affecting Vista quite a lot lately
