Move on Dell… go ahead and be happy with (K)Ubuntu Feisty Fann 8)
Hi Tech,
Why there is only Dell offering alternative distro’s?
polonus
Official now…
I don’t know… but it’s a good idea, better than to ship an empty computer (without Windows)…
This way users can test if Ubuntu fills it’s needs.
But I think Kubuntu will be better than Ubuntu (more similar interface to Windows).
I agree it’s a good idea, and it’s great for desktop Linux. Gnome is standard to Ubuntu, so I assume that’s why they’ll go with that interface.
However, what’s going to determine whether I buy Ubuntu preinstalled, will have everything to do with price.
If it’s cheaper to buy the same box with Windows, I’ll buy that (with the same hardware as on the Ubuntu dedicated machine), and either dual boot, or zip the Windows install, and install Ubuntu myself.
I’m in the market for a new box, so I’ll be anxious to see how the pricing shakes out…
Could always build your own. It’s quite easy and more often than not quite a bit cheaper. ;D
That’s an idea…thanks.
Or get a mac and boot XP/Ubuntu/OS X n the same machine ;D
The head of Toshiba’s Italian division says the company is thinking about giving customers the option of ordering Tecra, Satellite, Portege and Qosmio notebooks with Linux preinstalled.
Luigi Cattaeneo says the move would allow the company to sell notebooks in 500 Euro range, which could help Toshiba compete with European market leaders HP and Acer.
The news comes at a tim when Dell is preparing to offer computers pre-loaded with Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn. There’s no word on whether Toshiba would plan to offer laptops running Linux in the U.S. as well.

I can handle a split personality (dual boot), but I don’t know if I could handle a fractured personality.
Interesting thought though. My son-in-law just bought a new top end Mac, with custom paint, dual exhausts, electric start, and two monitors. He’s offered me his “old” (as in two years old) iMac. I might take him up on it. Then I can be .:OrangeCrate:.
;D
Why do you think using different OS - open source or not - will divide a man into pieces?
It’s a joke Tech. Something must be getting lost in translation. Sorry.
It’s a joke Tech.
