Your choice.
Virtual machines are good places to see how viruses/malware play without infecting the main PC and how avast reacts to it.
I always install an antivirus into Windows guests.
But, also, I allow access to some folders in the host machine.
For nostalgic reasons I still have a Windows 98 machine for Virtual PC. The last time I launched it, I wasn’t able to find a serious real-time protection, still supporting that OS.
It depends on how you setup and use the guest OS. Normally, it’s not really needed.
I’m with Tech I always install AV on guests.

I think Kubejc said a long time ago that an infection could pass through the network connection. But I’m not sure.
You’re right about that. Depends on the malware, there are infection which could spread through the network. Still, normally there’s little need of AV in guest OS if you already have AV in your host (even if you set your guest to share file, connection, or printer with host).
