Did AVAST block JS:Agent-DE[Trj] ? Please help

Is it possible for AVAST! to have blocked this malware from downloading into my computer from a popup?

I have the latest FireFox, SiteAdvisor, FireFox and Zone Alarm popup add blockers. I have Zone Alarm Firewall.

Earlier this morning, I went to (what I thought was) a game fansite mod page through a Google search for a particular mod I was looking for. It did not and Went to go “back” to Google when a notice popped up asking if I really wanted to leave the site. The notice was setup to look like a “security” one. First “red flag”.

This left and my popup blockers kept something more from appearing. I tried going “back” to Google again, when a popup for Protectionscanner.com came up to say my system may be infected (or something) If I wanted to try their “AntiVirus 2009” program to go to their website. I did NOT click on it. Then another one came up trying to get to me.to try their program out…again.

I could not use the “Back” button to get out and had to close the webpage. The popups were still there. I am very careful about where I go and use the SiteAdvisor only as a guide (the page was rated “green”) “Catch-22” and took the plunge to click on the second popup’s “x” to close it so my “back” button would work.

Immediately, AVAST! sounded a warning and a notice popped up, saying it stopped a trojan from being downloaded into my computer. This was the information it gave:

protectionscanner.com/2009/1/en/_freescan.php?nu=88765
Malware name: JS: Agent-DE(Trj)

VPS 081120-0, 11/20/2008

I check Norton and Kaparsky for information about this malware before coming here. It is a Rogue spam popup trying to get you to their webpage. If not, it will still try to download the “JS:Agent-DE[trj]” through the popup.

I scanned with AVAST! and nothing showed up to stick in the Chest.
The “Web Shield” tells me when I was last infected and the infector’s name but that’s all.

Read about SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes here, downloaded them, set them up and ran both types of scans (quick and thorough). SAS found 4 adware tracking cookies but nothing that pointed to protectionscanner.com.

(I do carry Ad Aware and Spybot S&D but decided to try the new ones first)

I cleared my FireFox Private Data and disabled third party cookies. Then went back to check on those cookies still in the folder and found/deleted the “protectionscanner.com”.

So, DID AVAST! stop the trojan download from the "protectionscanner.com Rogue spam popup or what?
Am I clean of this? Or what else needs to be done to make sure?

If you clicked “Abort Connection”, it stops the download.

However, your need to update your Java console.

Uninstall the old version of Java and install the latest here(uncheck MSN Toolbar at installation).

Download JavaRa to remove the any leftovers of the previous versions of Java and also Secunia Software Inspector to make sure all your software are up to date.

Hi VikingBabe,

Jtaylor83 is right, where your java version is concerned, check with secunia.
From your HJT logfile your system seems clean and is well protected by an av scanner and a firewall,
take the added protection of NoScript extension to your Firefox browser and download it from here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

polonus

Whew! Thanks Jtaylor83 and Polonus!;D

Thank goodness for the AVAST Blocker! And,Yes, I did click on “Abort Connection”. I will take your advice to heart and update my Java as suggested. Will add the Firefox NoScript extension too.

I used to use AVG Free in my previous computers, but decided to try out AVAST! instead after buying this new computer late last year. Installed ZoneAlarm for added firewall protection instead of using the WinXP one. Have used versions of Spybot S&D and AdAware for several years in previous computers.

I have had internet access for 12 years now. After some early run ins with malware and trojans when these first appeared, learned to keep my computers as well “armed and ready” as possible.

Not that useful nowadays…

Unfortunately, that has become true. SpyBot S&D has caught some things AdAware missed and vice versa, why I used these in sequence. I was rather upset when LavaSoft switched to AdAware 2007 from SE. Anyway, I have SAS and Malwarebytes now.

I do read various online security alerts too. Not from any paranoia but have been burned enough times early on, to know you have to stay aware. Kinda like driving defensively on a highway.
