did not stop smart HDD

On 4/6 my computer was not protected from the ‘smart HDD’ virus. I received a fake alert and my computer was pretty much hijacked. I was able to get to msconfig and remove checks from a couple items before shutting my computer down just before it was shutdown by the virus. I booted back up in safe mode and got an updated version of "stinger’ (free av from macafee) on a flash drive. I ran that in safe mode and it removed something called fake alert. I then shutdown and rebooted in normal mode and ran stinger again and it removed something with hijack in the name. I tried to run an avast scan and got the blue screen of death and my computer crashed. The crash generated a chkdisk to be completed and when it booted back up in normal mode I completed a system restore back to 8am. That completed. I then updated malwarebytes and ran that scan. It didn’t find anything. I then ran an avast ‘quick’ scan and nothing was found. I then ran an avast ‘full’ scan and nothing was found. I am thankful that my computer has been restored but it is still very slow to boot up. I also do not know where that ‘fake alert’ came from. If it was from a website that Avast didn’t warn me about or where it came from. I expected to be protected and I wasn’t. I have windows vista 32 bit and I have the professional version of Avast (pro antivirus 7). I pretty much use firefox and windows live mail.

No security program have 100% detection and new versions of these rogue programs are released every day

See the sticky post on top here. “logs to asist in cleaning malware”

Run OTL from that guide and attach the log,

Well the malware cleansing routine should be guided by one of our qualified malware removers. This because certain specific cleansing tools are needed.
Also these rogue programs sometimes come with other malware like vundo etc. A qualified remover has been notified,

Hi Beverly H,

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Let’s see what we can do here.

Like Pondus already stated...there is no antivirus out there that can have 100% detection. The people that write these viruses and such change them daily so sometimes things will slip through. ----------

Once you get the logs attached I will be more than happy to take a look.

Thanks for the comments. I do realize nothing is 100% reliable. My profession is Customer Service for an Internet Service Provider and I often tell my customers when they ask for recommendations that a security program is only as good as the person using it. ha! eat my words! Anyway, what is the purpose in running the logs? will it tell where the virus came from after I have already completed a system restore? I know I still have some hidden files, but I deal with those as they come up. Just want to know what can be gained by creating the logs.

One of the removal spesialist (jeffce) will help You Remove the infection

Hi Beverly,

Just want to know what can be gained by creating the logs.
Great question. The logs give us a good view of what is on your system and will help us to determine where your system is infected. :)

I am pretty sure the infection has been removed. Between Malwarebytes and ‘Stinger’ and the system restore - the infection has been removed.

So you don’t need help?
