I’m one of the few who don’t like the dark background. My eyesight is not what it was and it is almost impossible to read most of the Avast screens.
Is there a way to turn off the dark theme ?

It actually isn’t a theme. It’s the color Avast choose.
Avast hasn’t had themes for many years.
Try using the About Avast option in the (Right Click) Avast Tray Icon.
On that page there is a Got any Feedback, Found a Bug, let us know! Report Bug button. I would suggest you try to take advantage of that option and give them both barrels
Avast should make the User Interface (UI) more visually Accessible, it is meant to help those with colour blindness or are visually impaired or blind and have to use screen reader software. For my mind that should also apply to contrast to make things easier to read. They really could/should do a lot more in this regard.
Aside from having to wear glasses I have no problem reading the UI, but I feel the UI has gone to hell in a handbasket over the years mainly things are damn hard to find for the new user, god forbid that they are visually impaired also.
I also thought that this kind of thing was meant to be the law to consider a User Interface and Accessibility
