[siI use avast free and chrome and today installed the new version. Shortly after I hwards a message from chrome came up saying a new extension had been found called Avast Internet Security and asked if I wanted to enable it or remove it from chrome. Do I need this extension if I am only using avast free.?
Hi Judi50. This extension is called Avast Online Security details about this add-on are here https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/avast-online-security/gomekmidlodglbbmalcneegieacbdmki?hl=en
Basically what this tool does is these:
Avast Browser Security and Web Reputation Plugin.
Protection from AVAST for your Google Chrome browser.
Main features:
Collects data on phishing sites and warns if you visit them
Gives access to our website-reputation system, powered by a community of over 170M users
Warns when visiting websites with a bad reputation
Indicates a site’s rating next to its link in your search results
Enables you to rate any website, improving the system and helping other users
SiteCorrect feature: Automatic redirection of mistyped URLs to the legitimate one (e.g. llego.com → lego.com).
NEW in version 2014:
Interface is a lot simpler – just a ‘thumbs-up’ or ‘thumbs-down’ to rate websites.
New Do Not Track feature to block those annoying advertising and analytics sites from following you everywhere you go online.
Switches automatically to SafeZone when visiting sensitive financial sites (requires avast! Pro Antivirus or higher installed)
Personally for me I don’t use this at all, it’s all up to the user. If you don’t like this add-on. Close your chrome browser, go to add/remove right click avast, click change, click next, and just uncheck the components that you don’t like. In this case, uncheck Browser Protection and click next. After avast has done it’s job (uninstalling the feature that you unchecked it) manually restart your computer.
Thank you so much for your reply. I wont bother enabling it.
May I suggest, then, that you run the Avast Installer in “Change” mode from your Control Panel “Programs and Features” panel, and uncheck the [ ] Browser Protection box. Your web site access will still be protected by the Web Shield in the left column.
Edit: I just noticed Staticguy already suggested this. Sorry for the extraneous post.
