Hi, switched on my pc this morning to find that the hard disk needed repairing, so I repair the harddisk, loads of data was missing after this, I had to reinstall drivers, I restarted but the pc crashed before it shutdown, I restarted the pc, and now all my system devices are listed under KILLER NIC GAMING ADAPTOR, the system devices list isn’t there anymore, all the drivers that were under system are now under KILLER NIC GAMING ADAPTOR, so am I just corrupted or do I have a virus, just to add, a few days back I started getting access violation errors. Im using avast premier on windows 8 pro, I do have bigfoot killer nic but that’s listed in the proper place. Please, I need help asap, if its a virus then I need to no fast. Oh yeah, I ran a scan, doesn’t find anything, ive tested the antivirus also and it detects, but if it is a virus its very good well built to install itself and take over the system drivers etc. Im hoping im just corrupt, like I said, I started getting access violation errors a few days back and then today my pc said it neede to fix some errors on the disk, this is when all the pooh happened, loads of drivers went back to Microsoft generic ones, I had to reinstall them, but then it crashed on one that I missed, after this I got all my system drivers listed under my network card name.If anyone want to take a chance and connect to me and have a look im willing.
What gave you the message that your hard disk needed to be repaired? Windows? Malware does not behave like this. Did you run some sort of registry cleaner? Sounds like you need to format your pc and reinstall Windows. Do you have a backup partition or a system image stored on an external hard drive?
Yes, I have a system image, I just ran a restore from the system image, it failed on 1 file, and suggested I do it again from recovery incase the antivirus is protecting it, but everything as gone back to normal, yes it was windows, notification area, it said restart to repair disk errors, as I was typing this I just had 3 cmd windows appear and disappear, do you think im ok, system image restoring is painfully slow. The system image is stored on a backup drive.
Malware cannot just jump into an external hard drive. Restoring an image usually takes about an hour or so. Are you sure the image you restored was good? What program do you use to image your hard disk? Either way this is not malware related. How old is your system image? Are you sure your system was clean prior to making your image?
As far as I know my system was working fine when the backup was made, its all done with windows 8, there is a file that can never be scanned, its the nvdia GL cache, I suspect it was locked when doing a system restore, I didn’t install the full system image, just a restore point from that image, things seem ok, still no virus when scanning, ive tried malware bytes and avast premier, those cmd windows I think(hope) were something just starting up again after the restore. I do have a few things that use bat files., theres no activity on my dsl light, so I guess it was just corrupted, when I cleaned up the disk there where loads of chkdisk files so I presume that was all corrupted data?.
Why didn’t you just mount the stored image? Try that. Is this is new pc under warranty? I know that in Windows 8 you can reinstall the OS without losing any data.
I built the pc myself, if I mount the image I cant use the restore points from it, it does look more like data corruption now, when I ran the restore point, my system went back to normal, apart from 1 file that couldn’t be restored because it was locked, so I can either run it again from the recovery disk or just leave it, system is fine at moment so I choose to leave it for time being, if anything happens again ill do the full format and restore the system image that I have. Im glad its not a virus, something tells me its the damn heat, my room is like a sweat pit lol, the pc is just blowing hot air into itself, I guess it made the hard disk corrupt itself, what do you think?, ive read that heat can cause data corruption. Still, I felt a lot safer when I was using windows defender that came with windows 8, since I installed avast premier ive had AFD warings and cant flush registry hive warnings in event log, I don’t think its fully compatable with windows 8, I think the AFD is ancillary function driver, avast as broken it. Oh sorry, you mean run it in a virtual machine config? theres no point, I might aswell just install it and wait the hour to complete.
Heat is electronics worst enemy. Does your tower have plenty of cooling? Intake and exhaust fans? A blow hole fan? A side cover fan? Macruium Reflect, Easeus Todo Backup and Paragon are all free disk imaging programs which work great. Just be sure to make a recovery cd. I myself use Easeus.
HAHA, yes, I have fans everywhere on my tower lol, 2 on the rad, 1 massive one on the side, 2 on the top, and 2 where the hhd,s are, but because my room is so hot, there just sucking hot air in.Im getting a portable AC that uses ice(no exhaust pipe), that will do the trick, it will be £90 well spent, my equipment cost loads. My hhds are 42 degrees at the moment, usually they are 20degrees. I hate the summer, UK is the worst crappy heat in the world, its horrible humid and sticky, you cant breath, if you went abroad its completely different.
