Do we disable Network Shield if we use another firewall?

Hello, I’m using Avast Home Edition along with Comodo Firewall. I’ve disabled Network Shield (Avast) and Defense+ (Comodo), but was wondering if I should enable Network Shield?

Network Shield is NOT a firewall and doesn’t interfer with any firewall. In fact it provides additional protection even if you’re using another firewall (URL checking).

Avast really should word their website better as it is advertised as a “lightweight firewall”. I’d never had known that Avast wasn’t a complete internet suite if it wasn’t for this forum.

I hope they change this too, specially because they’re developing a real firewall.

no you should not disable it because it it is an IDS: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intrusion_detection_system
so in some places it is better than firewall 8)

You also should not disable Defense+ in Comodo, that’s it’s #1 means of protecting you and the thing that sets it apart from other solutions.

Defense+ caused my system to freeze once along with the fact that it has too many pop-ups. Besides, I think Avast malware protection does what Defense+ does, so there’s no need for duplicate malware programs. Who’s with me on this one? ;D

I’m not convinced that your misunderstanding is typical but now that you’ve pointed it, I agree that the entry on this page would be better if changed to somethiing like:
It’s an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) analyzing all network traffic and scanning for malicious content.

Re: D+ in Comodo

That’s just so true.

Avast!, as good as it is, is still a signature based detection product (with some heuristics thrown in) so new malware can still get past it. Defense+ would alert you when the malware tried to execute and let you prevent it. That is why you should not disable it.

Thanks guys for your valuable opinions! You have convinced me to turn on both Network Shield (Avast) and Defense+ (Comodo). I am very happy with Avast + Comodo now! ;D
