Lot of things can pass your firewall unnoticed. Read here:

Another example is things that actualy are tcp protocols, like SOAP, but run as http.
So SOAP is actually lying to the FW about what it is doing.
OK the articale is ancient in computer terms, but the arguments are even more valid then at that time. It is just a starting point for a discussion, you see.
