Does a Virus Go Away Without Being Identified?

Two days ago my computer rebooted and began a cycle of rebooting. My Avast icon had a little red mark on it and I got a system message telling me Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed and I couldn’t do a scan or control Avast (or my Windows Firewall, which had turned off). I did a system restore which didn’t stop the rebooting so I used safe mode to come to this forum and did an Avast boot scan which came out clean. As the computer stayed on for longer periods, I’ve done scans with MBAM, Spybot, SASW, GMER that all came out clean.

So my question is: how do I know this isn’t a hidden virus or trojan and if it is, how do I find it and (hopefully) remove it from my Vista system?

Thank you for your time.

PS I don’t know of any particular file that I opened or clicked on that might have held a virus.

hello trixie,

hmmm good ole vista lol.

hopefully a more experienced person will see your post and add some thoughts.

Im guessing your avast and firewall are both on now, and your experiencing no problems now?

since all your scans came up clean, you might be fine, you might have to wait and see if anything pops up out of the ordinary.

Perhaps doing a scan with malwarebytes in safe mode would give more piece of mind. Make sure you update first. If youve already done this then its moot point.

Id recommend another different scanner but youve seem to hit on a few already, so its probably not needed

just some thoughts.

Hi Saty,

Yes, Avast and my firewall are now working but I have this burning desire to find out what happened and if I’m really clean. I don’t mind doing more scans, whatever it takes.

trixie,

I think since everything is working normally your good to go, but since you asked…

here’s another on demand scanner, thats recommended often by people here, make sure you update

click on the free version of course.

I use malwarebytes and the above scanner exlusively

Saty

Yes, that’s one of the scans I used, it’s on my list, SASW

trixie

ahhh gotcha, Im not good with abbrievations. ;D

I think your good to go, but maybe you can keep an eye on your thread and see if anyone else has better advice to give.

Saty

Thanks for caring. Many will read but few will respond.

You are right, trixiebell, as many have read this post.

There were no other replies because none were needed.

But I was waiting, hoping to get a reply. Something turned off my avast and firewall on April 13, 2010 but nothing turned up on my many scans. Can you help me determine the best way to see if there could be some type of infection on my computer that isn’t being caught by the scans? I checked the Log Viewer and see several entries since April 13 of AAVM Start Error but the last trojan or virus was found earlier in the month and I didn’t see them in the Chest so I am worried there might still be something active.

Thanks and sorry if I didn’t state my needs more clearly, it’s rather confusing for me.
