Does Network Shield actually do anything?

I’ve been running Avast! for a few years and I’ve never seen the scanned count for Network Shield rise above zero. I’m beginning to suspect that I just don’t need to have that service running. Does it actually do anything, or does it just protect against something that is a rather rare occurrence in the first place?

Not now but it did plenty back in days of Sasser and MSBlast worms. There is also lots of ISP’s that block NetBIOS ports by default (i know my ISP did that), so Network Shield won’t even get a chance to block Sasser or MSBlast. But since there is zero impact on system by Network Shield, it’s smart to keep it running at all times.

As RejZoR says there is less of a risk post Sasser, Blaster worms, but we regularly see some forum members asking about Network Shield warnings they got, so there is still a risk and as RejZoR said there is no resource hit, so it makes sense to leave it enabled.

Many of these posts in the forums, either they didn’t have a firewall or it was disabled or not functioning properly so the Network Shield came into play, nothing wrong with an extra layer to your defence (belt and braces).

Thanks for the info, guys. I’ll leave it on!

Your welcome.
