Don't know what it is

I recently had to wipe my hard drive and start fresh. Today I noticed a new icon in my taskbar and when I passed my mouse over it instead of listing some kind of program or file, it listed an IP address. Does this mean that someone has hacked into my computer? The icon itself is small and blue, not a shape I can figure out. The icon also comes and goes.

Has anyone heard of this before?

It’s the icon from Avast’s mail scanner.

That makes me happy to know, but now I’m curious. The ip that comes up is 209.202.22.16.mts.net which is from Winnipeg Manitoba. Why is that?

Could it be the mail server location of your ISP?

I don’t think so as mts.net and inetlink.ca (my email provider) are two different companies, but I’ll contact my ISP at any rate.

Thanks for the help.

Some ISPs get their services from a main service provider (effectively a reseller). However you ISP should be able to say one way or another if the IP address is one it uses.

I’m not sure but some time ago it was written here in forums that this could be other servers that are inspected in the ‘route’ of the email. I mean, if you backtrace the email you’ll find that the email passed through that server before reaching you. Maybe I’m wrong :-[
