I just downloaded Avast home pro 4.8.1229, which I expected to be approx. 26 MB in size. On my computer, it now says this program takes up 71 MB. What gives?
What exactly takes 71MB?
26MB is the size of the (compressed) installed, not of the installed program, for example.
If I open Windows Explorer and find the Alwil Software folder and click on Properties, it reads:
Size 80.4 MB
Size on disc 80.8 MB
The setup folder alone is over 33 MB.
In comparison, Norton Antivirus folder on my computer takes up 58 MB. I thought Avast was supposed to be so much smaller than Norton, and not slow down the computer so much. Turns out it’s bigger. I’m confused.
Well taht folder is one thing but you have to also count those in the ProgramData and Application data folders and thats where Norton keeps most of its files. avast! on the other hand doesn’t.
Yes, sure, avast! installation folder is bigger than the size of the installer itself.
And yes, as Rejzor said, when you count the “hidden” folders Norton has elsewhere in the system, I guess you’ll easily get over 100MB.
However, if you’ve read something about the performance impact of the antiviruses, I’m quite sure it wasn’t meant as “disk usage”.
Okay, so it sounds like everything is as it should be. Thanks for clearing this up for me.
@ksteph44:
This may sound like a silly question but did you do a thorough uninstall of Norton before installing Avast! ? ???
Well, I think avast should kept temporary and profile files into that folders.
Ah… allow housekeeping to.
We have asked this before…
