I tried out the Driver Updater, which seemed to be ok. I returned it before the 30 day trial because my system is old, everything I need works fine and I didn’t want new drivers causing conflicts. Also my system seemed sluggish.
When I returned Driver Updater it was indicated that the program would remain on my system until the 30 days ran out.
However in the meantime my system remained sluggish. I used the Windows 7 task manager to watch what was happening. On the “Processes” tab, only a few percent of cpu usage was shown in the list of processes, but the CPU Usage at the bottom showed 30-60% usage, as it also did on the “Performance” tab. There I saw most of the physical memory being used, and the usage was slowly increasing until it was almost used up. The CPU usage continued to spike irregularly.
I removed the Driver Updater and immediately the memory graph dropped down like a stairstep. Slowly the memory usage continued to decrease. I rebooted the system and it is not sluggish any more.
Though I am not an expert in these things, I suspect a memory leak was taking so much memory that my system was “thrashing” memory to and from the hard drive, causing the slowdown.
I won’t be using the program, but I wanted to let people know in case they encounter the same thing.
