DSL disabled/no evidence of a virus

Hi,

We have recently switched from dial up to DSL. About 3 weeks ago, we suddenly could not get online. We went through our ISP who checked everything out thoroughly, several times, and proclaimed that our modem was faulty. They sent us a new one but we still couldn’t get online. Went through the entire process again. This time, we were told that the modem was fine, that the modem can communicate back and forth with them, but could not go further (internet). It was suggested that we do virus scans and spyware scans becuz it could be a virus and/or spyware.

Also, we can get online using dial up. We just can’t get online using DSL.

So we scanned our computers using various scans --Avast, AVG, Norton, Ad Aware…as many as we could. Found a few minor things but NO viruses or anything major.

The question is: could we have a virus/spyware that isn’t being detected? If so, how do we know its there and how to fix it? It was also suggested we do a full restore on the affected computers…would this be of help? I have read elsewhere that sometimes it doesn’t work.

We’re pulling our hair out trying to figure this out. We just don’t know what else to do at this point. Please help!!!

Also: I am running Windows XP sp2, my Mom is running Windows XP sp2 as well.

Thanks in advance.

Erin

A good start would be checking the connection/dsl settings.

  • Is it set as default connection?
  • Is there a proxy set? If so does the ISP tell you to do so?
  • Can you ping websites? (start, run, cmd, ping www.google.com)
  • Do you get a error if you try to connect/visit a site? If so which one?
  • Have you tried without the analog modem in the system?

Eddy,

Thank you for the quick response.

I’m not sure if my DSL connection is the default…don’t see it anywhere in the network connections menu…

As for a proxy – again, I don’t see that anywhere…where is that found?

As for pinging – yes, I can ping websites…tried yahoo.com, hotmail.com, and my ISP’s website, no packet loss.

Um…analog modem? Is that dial up? We’ve been getting online using our dial up but cannot get online using the DSL modem.

Error messages when trying to get to websites: This page cannot be displayed/cannot find server.

Sorry for the additional questions…I’m completely new at this stuff.

Thank you,

Erin

 Hi Erin :

  You mentioned your computer AND your Mom's computer;
does one use DSL & the other uses Dial-Up ? When one
has XP SP2 as an OS, the 1st thing to try to "restore" an
Internet connection is : click "Run", type "cmd", click "OK",
type "netsh winsock reset", etc .
Have you been using "online scanners" to look for "bad
stuff" or are those programs you mentioned been
downloaded, installed & updated ? To look for "bad stuff",
I recommend you download the good & FREE "Ewido"
from www.ewido.net/en ; then install & update it. Then
run its "Complete System Scan" .
What antiSPYWARE program(s) are actually installed on
the "problem" computer ? Are both computers having
  problems ?

Open IE (Internet Explore), tools, options, connections, lan settings < there you can see if there is a proxy set or not.

Did you ping while conneted with the analog modem (dialup)? If so, try it with the DSL.

Is the DSL modem also a router/firewall? Check the documentation or look up the info online.

Hi Spiritsongs,

Thank you for your response.

Both computers use DSL. Right now we are both using dial-up to get online until we figure out what’s going on.

Ok, when the tech support was troubleshooting, they asked me to do that reset winsock thing on my computer. It has not been done on my Mom’s. Should I do it again to both or just to my mom’s or not at all?

We have downloaded and updated Norton, Avast, and AVG. Ad Aware 6.0 also on both. We used a few online scanners that do free scans. We will try the Ewido next.

Both computers are having problems. My mom’s has Norton, I have Avast and AVG.
Both have Ad Aware 6.0.

Thank you,

Erin

No proxy is set.
Yeah, I did ping while on the dial up connection…whoops. Will try on the DSL.

As far as I know, our DSL modem is also considered a router. It is an Effecient Networks Speedstream modem if that helps any. I have looked into it and I believe it does have a firewall, problem is, I have no idea how to access those particular settings.

Thank you,
Erin

Can you give me the number on the dsl modem?
That way I can check what it exactly is.
It would really help if I have the specifications of it here.
There likely is a sticker at the back or bottum or something that has the number on it.

And how do you connect the system to the modem? USB, Ethernet?
And how are your moms and your computer connected to eachother?
And which one is connected to the internet?

I know, a lot of questions. But the answers will tell us more.

 Hi Erin :

A BASIC computer "truth" is that a computer should have
ONLY 1 "Running/resident" antiVIRUS program; if yours has
both Avast AND AVG, you should COMPLETELY remove

( uninstall, etc ) AVG to avoid any possible “conflicts”
between the 2; it is ok to “run” multiple “online scanners”.
I am a little concerned about you saying “Ad-Aware 6.0”
is on both computers; that sounds like the “old” version
that should be uninstalled and replaced by the latest
“Ad-Aware SE ( Personal ), Build 1.06r1”. What does it say
exactly in the lower-right hand corner of the “main” screen
of your Ad-Aware ?
I did not know it was possible to have both Dialup AND
DSL on the same computer at the same moment in time !?
I’m definitely not learned in this area .

It’s ok, the more you ask, the better picture you get of what’s going on.

Ok, number… …model # is 5861, part no. 120-5861-005. There’s another number towards the top that I’m not sure what it is: K721657S9677205.

We connect using an ethernet cable. My mom’s and my computers, as well as my dad’s, are connected via a router, the Linksys Wireless. However no one is connected to it right now as the tech support people had us disconnect from it to better isolate the problem.

Right now, my computer --the main one–is connected to the internet. We decided to try to get mine online first, then add the others back in.

I hope that’s clear enough. If not, let me know.

Cheers,
Erin

I did ping various internet sites using the DSL and got the error: cannot find host address (or some such thing).

Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Erin

Yep, I know that usually it’s not a good idea to have more than one virus scanner/spyware program at a time. It’s just that various people have suggested we try this. I will uninstall AVG.

My mom has the Ad Aware Personal SE 1.06. I have Ad Aware SE Personal build 6.181.

We don’t have the computers on DSL and dial up at the same time. When we’re using the dial up we disconnect the DSL modem since it’s not working anyways.

Thanks,
Erin

OK, what you got there is not only a DSL modem.
It is also a router and firewall.
I got a feeling that it is a wrong setting somewhere.
Please do this:

start > cmd > ipconfig
It will show you 3 IP adresses.
Let me know which ones you get.
Make sure you do this with the DSL modem connected and not the dial up!

 Hi Erin :

Based on what you posted, it sounds like you have the
"old" Ad-Aware, that is no longer "supported"; at some
point in time, you should uninstall it, then to get the latest
 version, go to www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html .
Have you run Ewido's "Complete System Scan" or run
 its "Online Scanner" ?
Who is your ISP ? I assume your father's and mother's
 computers use the same !?
Do you have a zip utility on your computer, such as
 WinZip, etc ?

I am downloading the upgraded version of Ad Aware as I type this.

I will be trying Ewido ASAP. Dial up is sooooo slow.

Our ISP is provide.net, which is local, Ypsilanti, MI and we’re all on the same one.

I do have winzip, yes.

Thanks,
Erin

Eddy,

Ok, I will do that.

Thanks,
Erin

Spiritsongs - I ran the upgraded version of Ad Aware and I got 55 tracking cookies, medium risk, no big things.

Eddy - Here are my 3 ip addresses:

IP address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

This was using the DSL line.

Thanks,
Erin

Please read the instructions HERE and make sure the router is configured and connected properly.

Eddy - I downloaded that manual, but when I tried to access my router settings, I got an error message: page cannot be displayed. No login box, nothing.

What the heck does that mean? bangs head against the wall

Thank you,
Erin

It means that your system is not properly connected to the router.
Could be wrong setting, bad cable, bad contact of one of the plugs, broken router, etc.
I would say, check everything, try another cable, make sure the network card is properly installed.

If all looks ok, have a tech take a look at it.

There don’t happen to be a error listed in device manager?
