Duplicate email

Hi,i have scanned my system with avast and could not find anything, but when I send a email with a attachment there can be upto 48 same email sent.Avast will find it when it arrives and says it is heuristic and tells me to delete or continue. Can anyone help.

If a virus is replicant (coming and coming again), you should:

  1. Disable System Restore on Windows XP: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];310405
  2. Clean your temporary files.
  3. Schedule a boot time scanning with avast. Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning. Select for scanning archives. Boot.
  4. Use a-squared, ewido or Spyware Terminator (trojan removers).

You’re most probably infected and your computer is acting like a zoombie, sending emails…

As Tech said you almost certainly have a trojan that is sending these emails and the best tools would be the trojan removers he mentions, run preferably in safe mode.

If you have an effective firewall it to should have alerted you to an unauthorised outbound internet connection, which you could block, it may also tell you the name of the process sending the email. Do you have a firewall, if so what is it ?

Hi Tech and DavidR,thank you for your replies. As soon as I do what you have said I will get back to you and let you know what happens.About the firewall,I thought the firewall on XP pro was enough but apparently not.Could you suggest a good one.
Thanking you both

Hi to all that have helped.I am finally getting back to you.I tried every program you said but no luck. One found a trogan in the reg; but could not fix it so i deleted it and restarted the computer to no avail as when i sent a email up to 39 would go,ran the trojan finders and they could not find anything.System restore was off and in safe mode.At first it would mass mail only on attachments but after that it would mass mail text.I bit the bullet and formated, the problem is fixed now and nobody in my family will open attachments ever again.
Thank you for your help.

Sorry you weren’t able to resolve the problem without having to bite the bullet and format. If nothing else you have learnt a valuable lesson about opening attachments in unsolicited/unexpected email.

Now you have a clean start it is important to keep it that way, ensure you have a good firewall to stop unauthorised outbound connections and have a multi-application/level approach to your system security.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.

  1. Ewido anti-spyware If using winXP. or a-Squared free if using win98/ME. Which you have used and should have.
  2. Ad-Aware
  3. Spybot Search and Destroy
  4. Spywareblaster Don’t install this until you are clean.
